I have had a busy time of late.  After feeding my mother Sunday night, I spent several hours brushing her hair which is very relaxing for her.  Monday was teaching and physio.  Tuesday, I had a dentist appointment and then was a pampered Sasquatch getting my hair cut etc.  I rounded out the evening with a 2 hour meeting of our Pastoral Care committee at church.  I have my first assignments but they will have to wait because I have come down with something.  It may well be allergies since the cottonwood trees and broom are both out.  We'll see.  I'm using my laptop much more but I can't seem to get a mouse to work with it.  That means that I can't do TC's jigsaw puzzles.

Short Takes

Think Progress — New polling released by the Center for American Progress on Monday, however, indicates that the public has turned hard against the GOP’s plan to simply ignore Garland’s nomination. Among other things, the poll finds that registered voters overwhelmingly support giving Garland a hearing and a confirmation vote:

Garland Poll

It appears that Republicans are committing hari kari.  In playing their little games over the nomination of Judge Merrick Garland, Republicans appear to have put themselves at a disadvantage with voters.  Just how long will they insist on blocking Obama just because he is Obama and wilfully ignoring the needs of the country?

NY Times — An Alabama judicial oversight body on Friday filed a formal complaint against Roy S. Moore, the chief justice of the state’s Supreme Court, charging that he had “flagrantly disregarded and abused his authority” in ordering the state’s probate judges to refuse applications for marriage licenses by same-sex couples.

As a result of the charges, Chief Justice Moore, 69, has been immediately suspended from the bench and is facing a potential hearing before the state’s Court of the Judiciary, a panel of judges, lawyers and other appointees. Among possible outcomes at such a hearing would be his removal from office.

A start to the end of Chief Justice Roy Moore of the Alabama Supreme Court?  Be still my heart!

Huffington Post — After being welcomed to Canada with open arms, Syrian refugees in Calgary are now giving back to their neighbours up north.

A group of newcomers part of the Syrian Refugee Support Group Calgary are offering up what little they have — Walid Ajram is collecting hampers of necessary supplies, while Rita Khallas is collecting $5 donations — for evacuees fleeing Fort McMurray's wildfire.

On Wednesday, refugee Naser Nader spurred hundreds to action when he wrote on Facebook about his wish to repay Canadians by helping those affected by the blaze.

Are these the people so many Americans, especially politicians, fear?  They are genuinely jumping in to help during a disaster in Fort McMurray any way they can.  They truly understand what it is like to lose everything.

  1. Squatch, I'm glad you got some pamper time and hope you feek better.  Just plun any mouse into a USB port and Windows shouls recognizwe it.  If it doesn't, go to the website of manufacturer of the mouse and download the software for that mouse.  Install the software and the miuse should work,

Any Dem would appoint a pore progressive Justice than Garland after the election.

    Amen!

Kudos to the refugees and the Canadians that gave them sanctuary,

    The POOR puddy tat!

  2. In using laptops, I have found that some mice (and some other small peripherals) are darned picky what operating systems they will work with.  Also, I see that USB 3.0 is now out.  While they try to make everything using USB 3 compatible with systems running 1 and 2, or just 1, it's still possible for there to be a mismatch.  I'd be more specific if I understood it better myself.  TC gives excellent advice.

Think Progress – Their Masters told them they (the Masters) didn't care about the Senate but do care about the Supreme Court.  In other words, they are being ordered by their Masters to self-immolate, and will do so (or work on it) as long as that order is in effect.  I am quite serious.

NY Times – He was removed from office previously under similar circumstances.  Then he was ELECTED back in.  I don't know that Alabama has the machinery to make him ineligible permanently.  Legislative changes may be required.  Still, this is a nice victory.

HuffPo – Yup, these are the people so any Americans fear.  Foolishly.  Unless what they fear is being shown up for the ungracious $%^&**( they are.  Then it would make sense.

    Universe – Poor baby indeed

  3. TP: I agree, it's beyond sheer stupidity for the GOP to ignore this confirmation!! Just do your job!

NYT: This is the 2nd complaint lodged by the state’s Judicial Inquiry Commission against this same judge! "In 2003, he was ousted by the same body from his position as chief justice after disobeying a federal court order to remove a two-ton monument of the Ten Commandments that he had installed in the rotunda of the state judicial building."  Moore needs to be fired, and just go away, imo.

HP: Aww….These folks have Hearts of gold and compassion for others. So very, very kind.

My Universe: Love Simon, and my cat can relate to his adventures.

I too, have a laptop, and ended up connecting a keyboard w/mouse to it. I used it at school (when I was still working) and found it portable enough to use on the floor or in the cafeteria, (with briefcase). Now, at home, it's set up on a cabinet, and works very well, and less pain for my carpal tunnel. Testing at school(s), is almost done, today is the last day. Summer break is almost here.
Like your mother, I find brushing my hair very soothing to me. I believe the allergy count is high, at least here, what with the winds, and budding trees and plants. Hope you'll be all right.

    Thanks, Lynn for post.

  4. You're a very busy lady indeed, Lynn, and you overexerted your knee in the Alzheimer run, so your allergic reaction on top of all that must be a terrible nuisance. And I hope your reaction isn't stronger than usual because you've taken on just a little too much. Being tired affects our resistance in general, so do take very good care of yourself, my dear Sasquatch friend.

Think Progress: Even the Republican establishment would fear Drumpf's choice for nomination if he ever made it to president, which he isn't, because he's already flip-flopped from his list prepared by the Kochs' right-wing think tank to… whatever, and will probably do so a few more times. And they also know that the next president most likely will be another Democrat, so their blocking Garland's hearing and vote it's just a stay of execution and very stupid to boot as there's no way of knowing who the next president will come up with. Probably a real Democrat and not not a bipartisan like Garland. Again, the Republicans in Congress have made utter fools of themselves by passing up this golden opportunity offered by Obama to have it (almost) their way and the people know it. Harakiri, I wish, but then they stay on as the Ungrateful Dead, I'm afraid. Nobody notices the difference anyway.

NYT: I love to see all these signs that Republicans have just taken things too far and that decent people are so fed-up with it they are willing to take a stand against them. I hope Roy Moore suspension will turn into him being kicked of the bench for good and a lot of bad press for his actions to make sure his successor will think twice before pulling such as stunt to please the GOP in Alabama. Next, please…

HP: What a heartwarming story. These Syrian refugees put all those hate mongers on the right to shame. They've met with kindness and now they return it. Something to cherish and be really proud of.

My Universe: I just had a flash of déjà vu, but it was in marmalade color then, trying to look dignified walking down the garden path with a piece of duct tape stuck to his tail and shacking his hind leg every two second. LOL until I needed scissors to cut it from his hair because it had become embedded by the time he returned.

  5. TP: I think that they have still failed to get over the idea that a black man beat them…twice!

NYT: Yes, be still my heart!

HP: I think that Canada neds to build a wall around these folks: 1- So that they stay in Canada; 2- to keep the Donalds of the world away from them. Kudos!
