  1. Justice Stevens is indeed vary articulate and accurate in his observations and recommendations.  I realize that any of them would be impossible to implement with the present Congress, but I do have the concern that if we were to change the amendment to read "cruel and unusual punishment such as the death penalty," prosecutors would measure avary possible penalty against the death penalty and decide that if a penalty isn't  that bad, it's OK.  But.  It would be better than what we have now.

KY Dems – Oh, boy, I'll bet Edie's happy!  What a birthday present for you!  Yay!

CHN on housing – Speaking of miracles …

Mr. Fish – Profound:  "What my news sources are is I go to Google News. Because I think what I need to do is I need to see what the majority, the mainstream population is looking at. Which is usually the most ridiculous interpretation of what's going on in the world. Because that's what's mostly, that's the danger. It's, you know, when the herd, that's the information that the herd is being motivated by."

Goats – Up in the Rockies, telling the sheep from the goats gets harder.

  2. Justice Stevens: This honorable man is a true conservative in every way with the exception that he also believes you can learn and change your mind. And in his 37 years in Court he has learned that the justice system isn't infallible and may convict an innocent person to death, the costs of capital punishment do not outweigh the benefits, and it has been shown not to work as a deterrent; all of them "conservative" reasons for him to want to abolish capital punishment. If he can change his mind on conservative, non-political grounds, why can't Republicans also accept them and oppose capital punishment? Perhaps it's some kind of blood thirst that wants them to own and carry as many firearms as possible too.

Kentucky Democrat victories: May these unexpected victories herald a Democratic triumph in Kentuckyucky AND elsewhere! Taking two Democratic seats and a GOP seat comes on top off weeding out of some bad Democrats from the House (2 who joined the GOP and 2 who let themselves be bought off with a well-paid state job by the Republican governor) so Kentucky Democrats can confidently go into the November elections.

Wage Inequality: it continued and that is what we all suspected but now know for sure. And with Republicans calling the shots for their corporate masters, this will continue for many more years to come.

The Housing Opportunities through Modernization Act (H.R. 3700) will update and streamline rental assistance programs. Sorry to be so skeptical, but whenever we hear "update and streamline" we know "cut" and "downsize" will be the reality. I hope that this bill is meant to be a genuine improvement for all.

That Welfare Reform is in dire need of substantial and coherent reform.

Egypt: How can a corrupt regime end corruption in a country when it only looks to its citizens and not within the walls of government?

Russia in Syria: No one has a clue why Putin is drawing back Russian troops and material from Syria, but it certainly undercuts Assad's strong negotiating position in the peace talks he had acquired with the help of the Russians. Let's hope Putin doesn't change his mind again for whatever reason and rebuilds his support for Saddat's military actions against Syrian rebels that are not Da'esh. It is doubtful though that any peace in the region is feasible when the Western allies are still intent of eliminating Da'esh and bombarding them and the civilians they took shelter with.

Wonderful sturdy and robust animals, goats on steroids.

  3. Can't help but think that "Buyer's Remorse" over Kentucky's new Teabagging carpet-bagger of a governor (Bevin) played a role in helping the Democrats keep – and expand (slightly) – their control of the state House.

I'm all for legitimate "Welfare Reform" – as long as it starts w/ the true "Welfare Queens" of our country … Corporations!

  4. TRN: While we lived in NC, I remember reading about this massacre. The Truth & Reconciliation Commission found the KKK & ANP and police incited the violence that led to these deaths. Tragic! In 2015, Greensboro erected a marker commemorating the event.

DK: What wonderful news! WTG, Kentucky!

Reuters: "U.N. envoy Staffan de Mistura called President Vladimir Putin's surprise move a "significant development" toward resolving a conflict which this week passes its fifth anniversary." Very encouraging news.

Just for Fun: How relaxing. Was it the music, or their unhurried approach to moving? Good video!

Great subjects/links. Thank you, JL for your Tuesday's Tidbits.

  5. Kudos to Kentucky for saving their House'

When I climbed Mt. Ranier in my youth, I saw the goats.
