OTTAWA — The nine-year reign of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his Conservative Party came to a sudden and stunning end on Monday night at the hands of Justin Trudeau, the young leader of the Liberal Party.

Starting with a sweep of the Atlantic provinces, the Liberals capitalized on what many Canadians saw as Mr. Harper’s heavy-handed style, and the party went on to capture 184 of the 338 seats in the next House of Commons. The unexpected rout occurred 47 years after Mr. Trudeau’s father, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, first swept to power.

Canada’s general elections have concluded with a landslide win for the Liberal Party and their leader, Justin Trudeau, ending the almost 10-year-rule of the Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) and Prime Minister Stephen Harper.

  1. I read this morning  that on a provincial level that this election also means an end to Endbridge's plans.

  2. Justin Trudeau is in!

Harper and his harlots are out!

    Awesome!

  3. It was the best news to start my day: Canada is on the way back and reclaiming its sanity.

    Congratulations to all Canadians!

Something had to give and in this case it was the NDP and the Greens, but that often happens when people start voting strategically out of fear that a vote for a smaller party may not be enough to change things. With this landslide win for the liberals the People of Canada have clearly shown how much they wanted to get rid of the right wing conservatives, maybe next time they dare to go even a little more progressive.

Could you please send some tips to the American Democrats, mr Trudeau?

  4. Wonderful news! Now if only we can do someting similar in the U.S. Congratulations, Canada.

  5. Hopefully, this sweeping CHANGE birth of the border will SPREAD SOUTH!!

One way to make sure of this is to be SURE and get out and VOTE!!! If you know someone that wants to go to the polls and don't have a way, offer a ride! If someone needs to go register, offer a ride to go register!!

DEMOCRATS WIN when the voter turnout is HIGH!!!! Repukkklicans win when voter turnout is LOW!!

WANT to change things? Make sure to get out and VOTE!!! Our WORLD depends on it with the way the RepukkklicanTs feel and talk about Climate Change!!!!!

  6. Great news for Canadians!!!

  7. Great, great news for us as well as for Canadians.  (What's good for your NICE next door neighbor is good for you.)  Now tarts the cleanup from the messes Harper and his harlots left.  Much stamina to Canadians!

  8. Canada’s New Prime Minister to Open Doors for Syrian Refugees

  9. Congratulations to Canada!

  10. I am very happy that Harper is toast . . . burnt toast!!!

I did provide some details in Squatch’s Open Thread 20/10/2015.  At dissolution of the last government, the Conservatives held 159 seats, NDP 95, Liberal 36, Bloc Québécois 2, Green Party 2, Strength in Democracy 2, Independent 8, and 4 vacant seats.  As a result of the last census, 30 new seats were created for a total of 338. For a majority government, a party will have to win 170 seats.  The results of today's election have Liberals with 184 seats, Conservatives 99, NDP 44, Bloc Québécois 10, and Green Party 1.   That means, in effect, that the Liberals took 60 seats from the Conservatives, 51 from the NDP, 1 From the Green Party, and took the 4 vacant seats and all 30 of the new ridings.

Regionally, you can see the results HERE .  The Conservatives hold most of Alberta, a chunk of BC mostly in the northeast, southern Saskatchewan, and southwest Manitoba.  This is mostly farm and oil country.  Having lived in northeast BC for 3.5 years, I can confirm that the people are conservative there . . . farmers and oil!

The new cabinet appointments will be made known 04/11/2015, the day that the new Prime Minister and cabinet ministers are sworn in.  Already there is a big difference between Harper and Trudeau . . . Trudeau held a press conference today answering a lot of questions, something Harper was loathe to do.  Of course "battle plans" to tackle various issues are not drawn yet but as cabinet ministers are identified, they will definitely be in the works.

Did I mention that I am very, very happy with the outcome of the election.
