Year after year, the major oil companies and other corporate energy giants have been spending $millions to sell people on the myths that burning fossil fuels does not contribute to global climate change, and that global climate change does not exits. They have bought the entire Republican Party to assist them in propagating those myths, and to slash regulations that limit their pollution. The oil giants know better, and now we have proof that what they sell is not what they believe.
Royal Dutch Shell has been accused of pursuing a strategy that would lead to potentially catastrophic climate change after an internal document acknowledged a global temperature rise of 4C, twice the level considered safe for the planet.
A paper used for guiding future business planning at the Anglo-Dutch multinational assumes that carbon dioxide emissions will fail to limit temperature increases to 2C, the internationally agreed threshold to prevent widespread flooding, famine and desertification.
Instead, the New Lens Scenarios document refers to a forecast by the independent International Energy Agency (IEA) that points to a temperature rise of up to 4C in the short term, rising later to 6C… [emphasis added]

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
Sad that there cannot be more honest dialogue to develop new solutions that have benefits to all sides…yet those kind of win-win scenarios cannot happen when one player is so dishonest.
Those of us in the US need to remind ourselves that those are NOT Fahrenheit degrees. 4C is roughly 6-1/2F and 6C is almost 10F. That could be plants that need a hard frost in the winter to germinate in the spring, not germinating. In the summer – well, I'm not the only one who can do the math.
The question is, now that this is known, what will be done about it. I've been segning petitions to the UN the kick oil companies out of climate change discussions. Unfortunately, none of them will let me add a comment. I'd like to say, "They claim they are stakeholders. Sure they are. Just like pedophiles are stakeholders in K-12 education."
love your stakeholders comparison Joanne
These companies all know exactly what they are doing and choose to worship the almighty profit line. Why don't they care about their children's and grandchildren's futures?
Their “I’m not a scientist, but…” is getting OLD! What are they going to do when the whole peninsula of Florida is UNDER WATER?
Sometimes I just wonder how those people got to be where they are in setting government policy on climate change!
They bought the privilege.
Every time I send a letter to my senators or representative about this I get a reply that says they are trying to make the U.S. independent of foreign oil. BP is not an American company, but it owns half our Congress, as does Shell. Kentucky is basically owned by the coal companies. We are going back to the way it was in the early part of the 20th century, no one but the wealthy have any say so. They will suffer along with the rest of us when our earth cannot sustain us anymore.
Now I wonder how the climate denying Republicanus/Teabaggerum will deal with this New Lens document from Shell. Should prove interesting.
There is no doubt that climate change and global warming are an out of control train speeding at us with no brakes!
Excellent article and even better comments on here – I agree with everyone (sorry I haven't more time – hopefully the weekend will be better).
What can I say? Amen to all the above.
