I’m writing for tomorrow, day 187.  I didn’t get moving today until around 2 PM, far too late to have to have time to do research.  Yesterday’s Victims Impact meeting in prison was quite successful.  We had around one hundred of my guys, three crime victims, and twenty college student observers,  I gave the closing presentation on how people can learn to become perpetrators as victims.  I explained that being victimized is a reason for criminal acts, but not an excuse for them.  Being victimized can damage people so severely that their bitterness festers, until they are overcome with anger and despair.  However, even though the damage is not the victims’ fault, it is the victims’ responsibility to repair themselves, getting whatever help they need to do so.  If they fail to do so, and victimize others, that is their responsibility.  Then I talked about the the importance of having opportunities in prison for prisoners to learn to repair themselves, so we can all share a common goal to prevent the creation of new victims.  It was well received by all.

However, I was worried.  See below. 😉

  1. 3:37 Is anyone going to throw mw under the bus today?

  2. Cartoon ~ That cat is  a repeat offender. Naughty cat!

  3. 5:28 average now down to 5:33.  The robocall didn't help my time.  Not that I'm not glad to have a phone again after two weeks without, but this call was ill timed.

The top man in the Colorado Department of Corrections, who was appointed after the previous one was murdered, spent a night in solitary in order to be able to talk about it.  There are interviews and links all over the web about it – this one is to a radio interview he gave to CBC:
http://www.cbc.ca/asithappens/2014/05/30/we-cant-treat-human-beings-that-way-after-a-night-in-solitary-colorados-head-of-prisons-wants-change/  I will add that the prisoners think it was basically a publicity stunt and nothing will change.  You can make up your own mind(s) on that.  My only remark is the extremely obvious comment that funding plays a part.

    • "It's an old scam,.  When the Justice Center jail in downtown Portland opened up, several government officials spent a "night in jail" where they dined on catered steak and lobster, sipped fine wines, and slept with their cell doors open on heavy down comfortors.  So the prisoners have see this kind of thing more times that they can count.  We'll know when we see what he actually does.

  4. By the looks of things, just give the that cat the remote control and he's good for the weekend football!  Anybody able to get him some ginger beer?

  5. Something interesting I learn today.

Of course we all know of the events of "Benghazi", the numerous investigations and hearings brought to us by the scandal obsessed Republicanus/Teabaggers.  And I have since seen a few things referred to as "xxx ghazi" being a reference to the circus created by the Republicanus/Teabaggers, and their attempt to create a scandal to use against the Democrats.  What I did not know was that the word "ghazi" is a specific reference to a warrior.  This from Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghazi_(warrior)

"Ghazi (غازي, ġāzī) is an Arabic term originally referring to an individual who participates in Ghazw عزو, ġazw), meaning military expeditions or raiding; after the emergence of Islam, it took on new connotations of religious warfare. The related word Ghazwa (غزوة ġazwah) is a singulative form meaning a battle or military expedition, often one led by the Islamic prophet Muhammad."

"Ghazw or Ghazwa" are very appropriate for the right wing evangelical pseudo Christians of the Republicanus/Teabaggers who wage war on women, the poor, the middle class etc, etc.

  6. It sounds like you had a very productive day.  Were you afraid they would send you to a shelter?

    • Edie, I always joke with first time visitors to the prison that, in case they are not released at the end of the evening they should request A Block accomodations.  The azartoon turns the joke back on myself.

  7. It sounds as if you had an extremely successful day TC – one of the hardest things in the world is to try and get people to admit when they have done wrong – particularly in a macho culture where apologising is seen as weakness (in fact it is a sign of strength and personal growth as well as intelligence, compassion and walking the right path),  Well done!
