I’m writing for tomorrow, day 180, and this is my only article.  Street noise last night was far worse than normal, as street sweepers took advantage of the rain and the neighborhood became an ambulance zone.  I finally slept for around four hours, cutting into my research and writing time, and I need to sleep more.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 3:06 (average 4:56).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Tales:

From The New Yorker: There is a deep-seated fear among some Americans that an Ebola outbreak could make the country turn to science.

In interviews conducted across the nation, leading anti-science activists expressed their concern that the American people, wracked with anxiety over the possible spread of the virus, might desperately look to science to save the day.

“It’s a very human reaction,” said Harland Dorrinson, a prominent anti-science activist from Springfield, Missouri. “If you put them under enough stress, perfectly rational people will panic and start believing in science.”

Additionally, he worries about a “slippery slope” situation, “in which a belief in science leads to a belief in math, which in turn fosters a dangerous dependence on facts.”

Andy has explained why Republicans want to substitute a travel ban dealing with the problem.

From Daily Kos: The Arkansas Supreme Court confirmed the decision of an appeals court Wednesday and overturned the state’s strict voter ID law on a 7-0 vote. Since the grounds for reversal related solely to a violation of the Arkansas Constitution, chances are the decision will not be subject to review by the U.S. Supreme Court.

That’s one more state that will be harder for Republicans to steal.

From Upworthy: \They Were Shooting A Beautiful Video From Space. Then They Sped It Up. Just WOW.

I’ll second that. WOW!

  1. 3:03 Looks ike summer again.

  2. New Yorker ~ God forbid the country turn to Science!

Daily Kos ~ This seems to be a trend. Conservative judges are doing it too.

Upworthy ~ Breath taking! It's our only Earth. Protect her.

Cartoon ~ I really hope they get caught in some more fraud this year. Better yet, maybe they will get caught before the elections.

  3. Two comments WRT Ebola:

When your right-wing rethuglican friends start whine because someone on Faux Noise said Pres. Obama is not doing enough because there's been one death from Ebola in America, just remind them of this:

Reagan remained silent about HIV/AIDS from the very first confirmed cases in 1981 until the end of his second term, not speaking out about the disease until May 31, 1987. By the time Reagan addressed the epidemic at the Third International Conference on AIDS in Washington, 36,058 Americans had been diagnosed with AIDS and 20,849 had died.

And to make them feel safer, you can also remind them of a Tweet I saw that I'm paraphrasing:

To date, EVERY case of Ebola that has been treated in America is the result of one human being helping another human being.

So relax, republicans – you’re in the clear.

  4. 6:15, average unchanged. I thought it was tough; and not even any food.

New Yorker – Well, that would be nice.  Experience shows it doesn't work that way – that fear makes people more superstitious,, not less.  But – we can hope.  I love Nameless' take.

Daily Kos – Well, now, that IS nice.  May it spread.

Upworthy – yeah, "Wow!" about says it.

Cartoon – That mace is really a taser, right?  I know they are reactionary, but I didn't think they were so reactionary as to go back past tasing.  As far as getting caught for voter fraud, Susan Martinez (Gov – NM) has been caught and will no doubt still be reelected in a landslide.  Just to name one.  Did you not already feature this TC?  https://progressnownm.wordpress.com/2014/10/10/we-found-voter-fraud-in-new-mexico-but-its-not-where-you-think/  I guess a reminder won't hurt.

    • It's not a taser.  It's a particularly nasty mace, intended gto inflict permanent damage.

I have not, but it'sw not unusual.  Virtully all instances of actual voter FRAUD, have been perpetrated by Republicans.

  5. New Yorker – if only Andy was right, but sadly I doubt it…. beautifully put though.

Daily Kos – good news at last.

Upworthy – I missed this, thanks so much for alerting me to this beautiful video TC!

  6. I hope you get some sleep tonight.

The New Yorker:  How dreadful if people actually believed in science and math, what would the tv networks do for a living if that happened?

Daily Kos:  Too bad the same thing didn't happen in Texas.

Upworthy:  Wow is right, and yes, we do need to take care of it.

    Cartoon:  That will be next.

  7. Puzzle — 3:12  This reminds me more of Europe than North America, but it could be either.  We had an old boat named "The Nancy" that had a similar profile but was mostly mahogany.  Her predecessor was named "Nancy I" and after her days were done, she became the sandbox tucked under some trees.

The New Yorker — Love Nameless's paraphrase of a Tweet on the ebola crisis and Republicanus/Teabaggers:

To date, EVERY case of Ebola that has been treated in America is the result of one human being helping another human being.

So relax, republicans – you’re in the clear.

This is so accurate . . . they don't care about anyone so they shouldn't be in any danger!

Daily Kos — Strict voter ID laws may have been overturned in Arkansas, but Republicanus/Teabaggers have have ways to steal elections than Carter has pills!

    Upworthy — VERY COOL!!!

Cartoon — My guess is that mace looking device is actually a new style taser . . . each point flies off allowing the wielder to hit multiple targets and therefore be more efficient suppressing the vote.

    • That's the diffewrence between ObamaCare and RepubliCare, with the free death benefit ((f you can't pay for care, you can die for free.).  Obama cares.  Republicans don't.

  8. Loved the Upworthy video, T.C. The music is very similar to the brainwave entrainment music I listen to daily, so that alone made the video worth playing. It was, however, the photography that blew me away. It was a spectacular reminder of what a wondrous thing our universe is (all that beauty, and intelligence, too). If there is a god, it's name is Multiverse.

  9. re. Ebola .etc.

Watched the world news this am. and thought that it MUST be a comedy show. Three stooge,s on steroids.!

People buying "hazmat " suits,()panic strikes!) Permit to carry a gun ,acceptable for voting ID. Student ID. NO!!.

Voter FRAUD  BIG DEAL (according to Republican twit!. )NO folks. Facts , it is not!

Dumb Ass Texas politition speaks nonesense  again! Do not need three guess,s.!! Who in  hell voted for him??!!.
