I’m writing for tomorrow, day 77, before leaving to go to the doctor.  Unless I get a highly unexpected second wind, this will be tomorrow’s only article.  Tonight is the last of the pretend worship days in Church of the Ellipsoid Orb.  Nevertheless I will be worshiping this evening, if I can stay awake for it.  Real worship starts next Thursday evening.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today’s took me 3:51 (average 4:54).  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Religious Agony:

0829-Broncos24-Cardinals32

Short Takes:

From NY Times: Unless a handful of wavering Democrats change their minds, the Republican-controlled Missouri legislature is expected to enact a statute next month nullifying all federal gun laws in the state and making it a crime for federal agents to enforce them here. A Missourian arrested under federal firearm statutes would even be able to sue the arresting officer. The law amounts to the most far-reaching states’ rights endeavor in the country, the far edge of a growing movement known as “nullification” in which a state defies federal power.

These damn fool Republicans refuse to admit that this issue was settled at Appomattox Courthouse.

From Right Wing Watch: The Christian Broadcasting Network has embarked on a total and frankly embarrassing cover-up of Pat Robertson’s statement yesterday that gay people in San Francisco try to cut people’s fingers with special rings in order to infect them with AIDS. After editing Robertson’s comments out of their online broadcast of the 700 Club and taking down their own YouTube video featuring the claims, CBN has now filed with a flimsy copyright complaint against Right Wing Watch’s copy of the video on YouTube, causing it to be temporarily removed.

That’s right, CBN is going out of its way to get rid of all evidence of comments made by CBN’s own founder, who even released a statement defending his assertions and insisted that he was once a target of a malicious gay AIDS ring plot. We have uploaded the video to Vimeo which you can watch here, unless CBN tries to take it down (UPDATE: Vimeo pulled the video, but you can now watch it on DailyMotion):

Update: Since I wrote this the damn hate monger has had it removed from Daily Motion.  RWW moved it to Flickr.  God only knows how long it will last.

This should rate another Republicans on Parade award for this hate monger, but it's too soon.  This Republican can run, but he can’t hide.  I wish I could see the expression on his face, when he hears the words, “I never knew you.”

From Crooks and Liars: This is your Moment of Clarity #257 [from Lee Camp]: This is the good news episode. In it I cover Mr. Rogers, rainbows, puppets, and people standing up against the pillaging of the world.

I like this guy! He hasn't uploaded Part 2 yet.

How in hell did we ever replace him with TEAbugger Thomas?

  1. 3:17 Am I the Tortoise ot the Monster-Mashin' Hare?

  2. Sorry you're in Religios agony. I still have to get my lineup ready for next week.

NY Times ~ It's almost as though they are gearing up for another Civil War. Must be the first one wasn't destructive enough for some of them.

Right Wing(Nut) Watch ~ Robertson is a very hateful man. Besides that, he is very ill informed. Privacy laws prohibit health professionals from disclosing any info about a patient to anyone without specific consent. I speak as a nurse. We couln't tell anyone if a patient "had a heart attack or high blood pressure" or anything else without signed release forms.  I would also like to see his face when he hears the words "I never knew you".

Crooks and Liars ~ Good video. I look forward to Pat 2.

    Cartoon ~ Historic!

  3. All too often I'm embarassed to say that I'm from Missouri.  But there was one sane comment WRT this issue – and it was made by a Republican!  State Rep. Jay Barnes said, “Our Constitution is not some cheap Chinese buffet where we get to pick the parts we like and ignore the rest."

And to start your weekend on a good note …

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg will become the first Supreme Court member to conduct a same-sex marriage ceremony Saturday when she officiates at the Washington wedding of Kennedy Center President Michael M. Kaiser [and John Roberts].

But not THAT John Roberts!  That would be too sweet.

  4. On a serious note, WaPo has a very good, and easily readable, Primer on Syria: "Nine Questions about Syria You Were Too Embarrassed To Ask"

PS – The idiotic Missouri attempt at nullification WRT gun laws will be overturned by the courts.

    • That is the best primer on the current state of affairs I have seen.

We need to be careful in drawing parallels between Syria and Iraq.  Bush was the worst liar in presidential history.

  5. Puzzle — 3:24  Hare!  Hare!  I bow this time to the hare, but will Jerry be Thumper and clean the carrot patch?

NY Times — Considered legal opinion says that "nullification" is unconstitutional.  One Republican, who voted against the bill said he voted against the bill because he swore to uphold the constitution.  One Democrat said he voted for the bill because that is what his rural constituents wanted, but he isn't sure if he'll vote to overturn the governor's veto.  I applaud the Republican (will wonders never cease!) and suggest the Democrat follow suit. Just because his constituents want it, does not make it right.  He should be educating his constituents about the constitution.

Richard G. Callahan… cited a recentjoint operation of federal, state and local law enforcement officials that led to 159 arrests and the seizing of 267 weapons, and noted that the measure “would have outlawed such operations, and would have made criminals out of the law enforcement officers.”

Not only would it make criminals of law enforcement, it would tell the real criminals that Missouri was open for business and not the kind of business Missouri wants.

I get the feeling that although the Civil War ended almost 150 years ago, there is a new civil war brewing, not necessarily a generalised armed rebellion, but a civil war nonetheless.

Right Wing Watch — A moral authority?  To me Pat Robertson is the spawn of Satan.  The sooner that people realise that his rants are just hatemongering, the better off they'll be.

Crooks and Liars —- I love the term "ravenous profit pimps"!  Apt description for the 1% and their political whores, the Republicanus/Teabaggers.

Cartoon — I wanted to check if this was a SCOTUS confirmation but appears that did not happen until 1967. He was appointed Solicitor General in 1965.  This from Wikipedia:

1961 – Appointed circuit judge, makes 112 rulings, none of them reversed on certiorari by Supreme Court (1961–1965).
1965 – Appointed United States Solicitor General by President Lyndon B. Johnson; wins 14 of the 19 cases he argues for the government (1965–1967).
1967 – Becomes first African American named to U.S. Supreme Court (1967–1991).
1991 – Retires from the Supreme Court.

    • TC has it right. The question of nullification was indeed settled at Appomattox Courthouse, but that hasn't gotten through to the babbling idiots who still refer to the Civil War as "the war of northern aggression."

On a side note, if you ever have a chance to visit Appomattox Court House, by all means do so. This is one that the National Park Service is justifiably proud of. Ironically, the owner of the house where Lee and Grant met, Wilmer McLean, had lived in Manassas in 1861 and had moved his family west to escape the war after surviving the first battle of Bull Run.

      • Amen!

Thanks John.  I did in my youth and found it fascinating.

      • I would John except now we need a passport and mine has long since expired, and getting travel health insurance is prohibitively expensive, if not impossible, since I am a diabetic.  But I will take your word for it.

        • Lynn,

My observation has been that in general, you know more about U.S. history than most U.S. citizens, so I'm flattered that you'll take my word for it.

I'll tell you the same thing I tell my children and grandchildren: even though you are far less likely to need one than they are, keep your passport current – just in case.

          Regards.

    • At least you weren't last! πŸ™

Very well said.  While it is a Representative's job  to represent the wishes of hos or her electorate, he or she jas a prior responsibility to uphold the Constitution.

Be careful, or Satan might sue you for defamation for associating him with Robertson.

      Amen!

      Good background!

  6. Robertson has gone completely off the wall – does he have Alzheimers to start such a bizarre rumour about rings cutting people?   (I noticed he forgot to say that the ring would surely have to cut the wearer at the same time to make an exchange of blood – people would be going round with bloody right hands and EVERYONE would have noticed!).  Poor stupid old hatemonger.  Patty is right – he is truly going to be told "I never knew you."

As for the proposed Missouri gun law – what on EARTH are they playing at????!!!!!  Utter lip-diddling lunacy!

  7. How in the world do the Missouri legislators think this will stay?  They are just posturing for their base.

Pat Robertson has always been off the rails, nothing he says ever makes sense to any rational person.

Lee Camp:  I will be interested in Part 2. He has it right about those brave North Carolinians who are being arrested for standing up against their numb brained government.

Cartoon"  We got Reaganism, that is how we got Thomas.

    • Of course it will be overturned.  Their hope is to stall that long enough to steal jusat the next elextion to keep them in power to come up with a way to steal the one after that.

  8. How did you do? 7:47

God only knows how long it will last.

Is this free will or determinism trying to control the message?

  9.  This is your Moment of Clarity #257 [from Lee Camp]: This is the good news episode.

    Enlightening, I like it… Can't wait for part 2. πŸ™‚

I like this guy! He hasn't uploaded Part 2 yet.
