The controversy involving the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation, and their attempt to politicize their charity, making it a Republican tool to wield against women, has barely faded from the news. However Karen Handel, failed Republican candidate for the Georgia state house, and Sarah Palin’s Teabagger protégé, is already telling lies and spinning the controversy to make it appear that they are the victims of Planned Parenthood, not the other way around that really happened.
Former Georgia Secretary of State and Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation vice president Karen Handel appeared on the 700 Club [pseudo-Christians delinked] today where she blamed the controversy of Komen’s decision to stop funding Planned Parenthood’s clinical breast cancer screenings and mammogram referrals…on Planned Parenthood. Handel, who as an unsuccessful Republican gubernatorial candidate in Georgia pledged to defund Planned Parenthood, acknowledged her role in convincing the organization to break ties with the women’s health group, but claimed that she was not the sole authority behind the decision.
While speaking with the Christian Broadcasting Network, Handel tried to blame Planned Parenthood for the controversy… [emphasis added]

Here’s the video.
If you remember, CEO Nancy Brinker, another Republican activist, who sucks up over $459,000 of people’s donations annually as her salary, originally denied that Handle had anything to do with it, so Handel is probably telling the truth that she was not alone in the decision.
However, the notion that the reaction to Komen’s decision was a top down effort, organized by Planned Parenthood, is patently absurd. It was a grass roots, bottom up, effort. I know, because I was part of it. Planned Parenthood was the beneficiary, not the instigator. The only political conspiracy involved was between Komen and the Republican Party in their ongoing war on women.
Do not believe Karen Handel’s lies.

I will no longer support Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation….
Nobody should!
Thank you for posting the truth about Susan G. Komen. They are considered sacrosanct in America today. But years ago, I read an article about how they helped to fund the Bush presidency with donations for the cure. That money bought them political influence. One never hears about their right wing agenda much in the media now. So, again, Tomcat, thank you for this extremely informative article.
It is indeed informative TC- Thank you– I stopped donating or supporting them at the time I became aware donations were going to Fund Bush– That was not the intent of most donors I don’t believe— It smelled bad at the time— I am glad I backed off– Never had much money to give– but I think few really do– Our donations were never , are never , meant to fund right wing politics– or for that matter Left either.
YVW, Angie and Phyllis!
If there has been evidence that SGK funded part of Baby Bush’s campaign, and this was before Citizen’s United, why isn’t the IRS all over this and doing extensive audits of their business? If their stated objective is to do cancer research and preventative screenings, then people who have donated so much to the Foundation have been mislead. The funds put into the campaign of Baby Bush, and anyone else, have been misappropriated from the Foundation. What I feel badly about are all the women and men who have been deceived about a cure and treatment for breast cancer.
Handel — ” . . . pre-meditated, orchestrated attack on a breast cancer organisation. And let’s remember that Komen is a breast cancer organisation. We’re not involved in politics or this gorilla grassroots campaigning . . . not for the sake of women’s health, but for politics . . .”
‘pre-meditated, orchestrated attack’ — The only thing I’ve seen so far is the pre-meditated, orchestrated attack on Planned Parenthood by SGK and the Republican/Teabaggers in their effort to wage war on women.
‘remember that Komen is a breast cancer organisation’ — I think more likely a quasi political organisation, using women’s health as a shill for right-wing fund raising.
‘We’re not involved in politics ‘ — Tell us another lie when there is evidence of funds going to Baby Bush’s campaign long before Citizen’s United.
‘not for the sake of women’s health, but for politics’ — That perfectly describes SGK — for the politics of the right-wing!
Cry me a river Handel. You give women a bad name!
I was not aware of that before reading Angie’s comment. It would certainly appear to violate 501(c)(3),
Exactly correct!
No one should ever give the Komen Foundation another dime, and that’s notwithstanding Handel. They are a Rushpubliscum front organization, they have been for a long time, and the percentage of donations taken to fund everything BUT breast cancer research is appalling. In addition to that, they’ve bent over backwards to soothe their corporate masters, up to the point of denying a well-known link between BPA and breast cancer cell growth.
Thanks JR. That’s excellent info, and I agree!
