When Elizabeth Warren withdrew her name from consideration for Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Board (CFPB), due to the certainty of Republican obstruction, she recommended Richard Cordray, and Obama followed her good advice.  Now Republicans have vowed to block Cordray as well.  The reason is that Republicans do not want consumers protected from abuse by Big Finance.  They side with the predators, and they are doing all they can to preserve the status quo that caused the Republican Recession, but enriched the 1%.

8CordraySenate Republicans on Wednesday showed no signs of backing down from their threatened filibuster of President Barack Obama’s nominee to head a new financial watchdog agency, even as Democrats framed the fight as a stark choice between Wall Street and Main Street.

“Wall Street has a legion of lobbyists protecting its interests. We need someone who can protect Main Street’s interest,” said New Jersey Sen. Bob Menendez, who joined other Democratic members of the Senate Banking Committee at a news conference. “And that’s what Richard Cordray would be as the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Cordray’s nomination is destined to fail in the Senate on Thursday, with Republicans nearly united in their opposition to the former Democratic Ohio attorney general. Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown is the only Republican who’s publicly backed the nomination, saying Cordray should be confirmed with a simple majority, not the 60-vote threshold the GOP has insisted on to avert a filibuster.

Republicans’ message to Cordray: Don’t take it personal. They just don’t want anyone heading the agency until its powers are rolled back… [emphasis added]

The single best thing about Dodd-Frank was the creation of Elizabeth Warren’s CFPB.  Democrats are backing your interests, by trying to appoint a strong consumer advocate.  Republicans are backing the corporate criminals that brought us ninja loans.

  1. OK—we’ve had enough of this Republiscum nonsense! We’ve all got to OCCUPY THE VOTING BOOTH next November and defeat every single Republican running! A massive progressive shift in Congress would cure most of our ills, to be sure! These obstructionists are wasting our time and money…

  2. What difference does it make: they’ve made their point LOUD AND CLEAR!!

And then they go and vote in the House to say that THEY CAN IGNORE AND VETO ANY LAWS THE PRESIDENT SIGNS IF THEY WANT TO.  What a bunch of sanctimonious, ignorant, hateful, selfish hypocrites!!!!!

    Constitution my ass.

    • Oh so true!!

    • Judi, I agree, but let me clarify one thing.  The bill they passed (which will not pass the Senate) would allow them to override federal regulations, and executive orders, not laws.  Effectively, they are trying to steal executive powers.

  3. I cannot add a thing to the comments already posted by Judi and Jack– well said and concise– What is going on defines and illustrates..Travesty..

  4. Repubicans have set a new record in filibustering to block confirmations – and it has NOTHING to do with merit, it’s solely based on ideological grounds!  Not only has Pres. Obama’s nominee confirmation rate been about half what it’s been since Reagan, it’s taken twice as long to even get those few confirmed.

Repubicans remind me of a spoiled toddler whose only word is “NO! NO! NO!”  They’re as annoying as this little brat … come to think of it, I don’t think there’s a bit of difference.

    • Absolutely no difference!

    • Couldn’t agree with you more Nameless.  At least the toddler is still learning so there is hope for her, but the Republican/Teabaggers are adults and should already know better!

I’ll tell you though, if I were that dog, I’d move out of the way of that rampaging hairbrush!

    • I agree with Patty and Lynn!

  5. Pres. Obama castigated them properly in this AM news conference.

  6. I know the republians what to be a internet sensation.  The 2 mins will not get them elected to the White House

  7. Republicans’ message to Cordray: Don’t take it personal. They just don’t want anyone heading the agency until it has been neutered and rendered ineffective . . .

The Republican/Teabaggers are so transparent — their obeisance to the 1% and the corporatists sticks out like a sore thumb.  They don’t give a rat’s ass about anyone else, including the poor misinformed, or otherwise hoodwinked part of the 99% that actually voted for them.  Personally, I think if the Republicans take the WH, or if the Congress is rendered ineffective because of the Republican/Democratic seat split, there will be a revolution in the country!

Every Republican in office is one Republican too many!
