Powell Fights Back

From what I have seen and read, Deferment Dick Cheney’s new book takes several shots at Colin Powell, because, toward the end of his service and afterwards, Powell has refused to goose-step to the party line.  To be clear, the image of Colin Powell, standing before the UN, parroting propaganda, that even I knew was not true, to justify Bush’s Republican war for oil and conquest, is irrevocably burned into my mind.  After that, he still has miles to go to regain credibility in my view.  However, I’m clad to see that he is pushing back against Cheney’s obvious lies.

29colin-powellFormer vice president Dick Cheney has claimed that people are going to be shocked by his new book, but former Secretary of State Colin Powell said Sunday that the tome was just full of "cheap shots."

Cheney told NBC’s Jamie Gangel last week that there would be "heads exploding all over Washington" when his new memoir "In My Time" was released.

"My head isn’t exploding and I haven’t noticed any other heads exploding in Washington, D.C.," Powell told CBS’ Bob Schieffer Sunday. "What really sort of got my attention was this way in which he characterized it, it’s going to cause heads to explode. That’s quite a visual and in fact, the kind of headline I would expect to come out a gossip column, that’s the kind of headline you might see one of the supermarket tabloids write."

"It was not the kind of headline I would have expected to come from a former Vice President of the United States of America. Mr. Cheney had a long and distinguished career and I hope his book that’s what he would focus on, not these cheap shots that he’s taking at me and other members of the administration who served to the best of our ability for President Bush… [emphasis added]

I hope that Powell continues to rehabilitate himself.  When he jumped on the Republican bandwagon he shattered an exemplary career.

As for Cheney, to improve our balance of trade, let’s export him to The Hague.

  1. I always liked Colin Powell but could never understand how he could get pulled in by Baby Bush. They aren’t cut from the same cloth at all. As far as Cheney is concerned, I never liked him. I felt I could never trust what he was saying — to me he was decitful and two-faced. I will want to view his interview on 29/08/11.

  2. “I hope his book that’s what he would focus on, not these cheap shots that he’s taking at me and other members of the administration who served to the best of our ability…” Sounds like a wimps response to me. Get out and shout the truth from the mountain tops Mr. Powell and felp send them to prison the feds will give you immunity if you tell the truth completely but this sounds more like a whine than a response.

  3. Cheney is the most despicable person who has entered American politics – worthy of execution – as for Powell – what a drop – the higher up you go the harder the fall, his prostitution was the most damaging to a career that I had admired and would have liked to see etched in history, not backened as a part the administration that destroyed the character and humanity of one of the world’s super powers. I guess the average length of most empires is about 200 years – so we’re no different – now we hand the baton to China!

  4. I would have trouble believing Cheney has any credibility whatsoever– Like a reptile–we know what to expect – so why does anything he have to say hold our interest-

It is very sad the damage done to Powell– an honorable man ; This entire things so starkly describes the difference in these two men ; Powell had honor to damage ; Cheney does not have a clue as to what personal honor might mean

    • Phyllis, I think that Mark is right. If he wants to rehabilitate himself he needs to tell all to but Bush and Cheney behind bars.

  5. Colin Powell is a pretty reserved guy, and the fact that he said anything is huge. Even so, he kept it classy, a completely foreign concept to Dick Cheney.

  6. 789I’m not going to push Cheney under the bus for that UN thing ; Bush and Cheney made him do it. He’s come to his senses and apologized many, many times for his error. He’s an honorable man in my opinion.

As for Cheney, you could send him out the Himalayas and someone would recognize him and send him to the Hague.

  7. Good on him! And the fact that Gen. Powell took the effort to make it to the studios in the middle of a Hurricane demonstrates just how LITTLE he thinks of Cheney.

  8. Cheney’s nickname is Darth Vader — richly deserved. My fondest memory of his time in office is when he was speaking to Hurricane Katrina survivors in MS or ALA and a member of the crowd called out “Fuck You, Mr. Cheney”. My sentiments exactly.
