Was God After Cantor?

All kidding aside, I have no intention to suggest that the epicenter of yesterday’s quake in Cantor’s district, after he took the lead in pushing Republican plans to defund federal disaster relief, was an act of divine vengeance.  Nevertheless, the happenstance is most entertaining.  It reminds me of the time when Pat Robertson prophesied that God would smite Disney World with a hurricane, because they had ended hiring discrimination against LGBT people.  The next hurricane to make landfall in the US damaged Robertson’s Virginia Beach headquarters.  Well, if it was God, you have to credit her with a sense of humor.

24CantorHatBack in March, after the Japanese earthquake, Eric Cantor defended Republican plans to cut funding from the USGS and warning systems to help in case of a disaster.

What if we where to experience a disaster like Japan? How prepared are we in our country? Yesterday house republican leader Eric Cantor defended republican proposals to cut spending for the United States Geological Survey, the National Weather Service, and NOAA.

Government officials predict the closure of as many as 12 NOAA offices – which provide warning services for 30 million Americans. The national weather service budget would be cut by $126 million over the next six months with furloughs at 22 forecast offices. -and shorter work weeks for the storm prediction center and the national hurricane center shall be expected.

Any local LEPC or emergency coordinator will tell you that the inability for warnings to be disseminated to the public, whether due to staffing inadequacies, radar maintenance problems, or weather radio transmitter difficulties would be disastrous.

Luckily, this wasn’t a quake like Japan’s… [emphasis added]

Keith Olbermann and Paul Tompkins had some fun with this on Countdown.

Taking a more serious turn, America needs to have emergency services fully funded,  Doing a heck of a job, just like Brownie, meets Republican standards, but we saw what Republican standards did to the people of New Orleans.

Furthermore America needs to take a close look at either upgrading nuclear power plants in vulnerable areas, and closing them, when upgrades can’t guarantee safety in worst case scenarios.  That could provide a lot of jobs.

  1. Funny!

  2. Why remove the mystical from the equation. I think maybe that creators spirit was tired of Cantor and sending his dumb ass a message that all people need to be kept as safe as he keeps himself.

  3. God cut out Cantor’s heart when he was born and gave him shit for brains. Remember his statement after the MO tornadoes that any aide the victims received would mean cuts in other places.

  4. On a serious disaster note, for those of you in the path of Hurricane Irene I would encourage putting together your emergency plans.
There are plenty of sites to help planning, but the FEMA one is very comprehensive – and branches to cover a wide variety of disasters/emergencies:

For a quick, comprehensive checklist, this one is solid:

  5. god has a sense of humor doesn’t she – look at what she’s been doin’ to Texas all summer – and a few of those there mid country states – seems like the U Sof A isn’t on the OMG list any more! 🙂 My daughter called from work to tell me she was ok after the quake (I thought she was joking) – while I sat in my apt. and got an alert of an earthquake in DC – never knew it hit here until she called – duh? No gargoyles fell from the sky though – and Washington Memorial still stands – with a crack at the top – seems appropriate 🙂
Seriously however, I do think you’re right about the nuke plants – Indian Point – so close to NYC failed the standards for safety, as did most of the plants in the country which were assessed after the Japanese disaster – nothin like a disaster elsewhere to let us know where we should be concerned – not to do anything about it of course, but not to be surprised if something happens! As for what might happen in the event of a disaster, unfortunately the cell phones were overloaded during this “disaster” – wonder if they do something about that problem!

    • Lee, on Texas, she gave them Bush and Perry. What greater divine retribution could there be? 😉

A lot of the cell phone problems were caused because the quake slightly misaligned some towers.

  6. The protests that stopped America building nuke plants warned of exactly the kind of “accidents” that have happened over the last 30 years.FEMA is under better supervision than “Brownie” gave us, but I still don’t think FEMA can handle major disasters well enough. Certainly not a nuclear “accident.”

  7. I’m thinking God may be trying to warn us about Cantor and his ilk.

  8. On a related note, just saw this on WSJ.com, a quote from France’s Prime Minister on how his country is dealing with their debt crisis (included is URL, in case you wish to read the full article). This is an example of how a sophisticated country deals with debt:

“The cost-cutting measures are a combination of an additional freeze on government spending, the closing down or capping of several tax loopholes, and an exceptional levy on France’s richest taxpayers.

Mr. Fillon said the French economy would grow only 1.75% this year, instead of the 2% previously anticipated, and that GDP would expand the same amount next year versus a forecast of 2.25% previously. He said the additional measures would generate €11 billion ($15.9 billion) in savings for France in 2012, allowing it to lower its deficit target for next year to 4.5% from 4.6%.”

  9. It doesn’t matter if hurricanes and tornados like red states best. The Mammonites will still say the GOP is God’s Own Party. And the ignorant will believe…

  10. Well, maybe if Perry and Bachmann would hold a prayer meeting the storms and earthquakes would go away.

  11. Well — since I don’t believe in coincidence I am not sure what to attribute this one too : It does it was a smack on greedy hands tho–

  12. The more I think of it, the more I get how attractive this Cosmic Attribution deal is. We need to keep in mind here that this is the district that elected the man who played chicken with destroying the American economy, and managed to inflict consequential damage on it anyway. I need to factor in the psychological service that belief performs in support of my world view. There’s that feeling of “rightness” that I grew up with as an American — the one that has been so horribly violated by the likes of Eric Cantor — (could there be any greater Cosmic Justice!) — now bolstered by this Cosmic Sign.

I can feel it now creeping up from the pit of my stomach. What are the chances! 435 Congressional Districts, and “The Force” goes after the villain determined to deprive the indigent of vital services — (there by killing countless thousands). . . . with an earthquake! If it was a tornado that hit Cantor’s district, you might equivocate a bit . . . There’s that possibility that a tornado came by coincidence. Tornadoes are not foreign that part of the country. But an earthquake! If this is not a clear instruction from the heavens, then what is???

  13. Since several of you think that God was directly involved, I respect your beliefs. It is my personal belief that God rarely, if ever interferes in the affairs of men. Consider that neither Bush nor Cheney was struck by lightning. However, I do think it possible that a certain karma is part og natural law.
