The Republican Party continues to unravel, as more and more senior Republicans are admitting the necessity to raise the debt ceiling under threat from their criminal corporate owners on Wall Street.  Eric Cantor now stands alone among the Republican leadership demanding that raising the debt ceiling be tied to billions in spending cuts with no revenue increases.  President Obama has scheduled a press conference for 11:00 AM (EDT) today.

"It’s decision time," the president told attendees, according to the notes of a Democratic official. "We need concrete plans to move this forward."

As the Aug. 2 debt ceiling deadline approaches, Obama and congressional leadership from both parties met for their sixth straight day of talks. There were no verbal altercations between the president and House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), as there had been the day before. In fact, multiple Democratic sources relayed that Cantor barely spoke.

"The meeting was mostly a presentation by the administration, so several participants didn’t talk, including Cantor and McConnell," explained a senior Republican aide… [emphasis added]

I expect that Obama will continue to bluff that he wants the big deal, with cuts to the big three and revenue increases on the table, knowing that he can get away with it, because Republicans will not agree.  He has carried it off so well that even most of his own base believes it, making it all the more effective.

Lawrence O’Donnell explains the Republican disarray and how bluffing on the big three is still working.
