Republicans have an election problem. Add up millionaires, billionaires, corporate criminals, racists and other bigots, Supply-side pseudo-Christians, and other assorted wing-nuts, and they have only about 20% of the electorate, or less. In addition they get votes from people they can fool into thinking that they will represent them. That still falls short. Therefore their success comes from preventing as many of those that they cannot fool from voting, so they are working hard to make sure that, if you won’t vote for them, there will be no vote for you.
Joan McCarter illustrates that point.
There’s one thing that the modern-day GOP and teabaggers have in common with our founding fathers: the idea that voting should be restricted to the "right" people, the people who "deserve" to have a say in how government functions. If they had their way, only white, landed, middle-aged and older men would vote. They’re doing their damnedest to figure out how to make that happen.
For nearly four decades, Maine has been one of eight states which provides same-day voter registration to voters at the polls. This policy of enfranchising the greatest number of Maine voters is likely to end, however, now that the GOP-controlled state legislature has passed a bill ending same-day registration and Tea Party Gov. Paul LePage is expected to sign it. Worse, state GOP Chairman Charlie Webster explained it was necessary to disenfranchise the thousands of Maine voters who take advantage of same-day registration every election year in order to save Maine from one of his paranoid fantasies:
“If you want to get really honest, this is about how the Democrats have managed to steal elections from Maine people,” Webster told a columnist for the Portland Press Herald in a piece published Friday. “Many of us believe that the Democrats intentionally steal elections.”
Sadly, Maine’s voter disenfranchisement bill is only the latest example of the Republican war on voting that began almost immediately after the GOP took over several statehouses this year.

Now, there is no evidence that voter fraud has had the slightest influence on any election in the US. Republican election theft has, but that’s another article. Ironically, in the few cases of voter fraud that have surfaced, almost all the perpetrators were Republicans. Rachel Maddow covers Republican accusations that Romney committed voter fraud, and how Massachusetts officials are covering it up.

Consider this. If your vote is not important, why are Republicans trying to take it away?

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
There is only three ways to win a race.
1) Work your ass off training, getting everything in order, and going in and giving it your all.
2) Massacre all of your competition so your the last one standing.
3) Only allow the judges you have in your pocket to be viable to determine the winner.
Which do you think is easiest for red state controlled governors and legislatures. With super max in every branch of government seriously which is easiest. sit on their asses and pass laws. Campaigning is hard and expensive and their corporate masters already own them so now that they are trained the taps can be a trickle and they still will react Pavlovian for a nickel rather than a dollar.
It took 99 years to begin the end of disenfranchisement after the civil war ended if we idly stand by and let them reinstate it then who are the stupid people?
Point well taken, Mark. 🙂
Can’t you just picture Mitt and his wife living in the basement? His wife said they live in La Jolla, CA.
Well, there are basements – and then are basements.
From campaign donation records, you can find that Taggart (Mitt’s son) lives at 171 Marsh St. in Belmont, MA … about a 7,000 sq. ft., 3-story little place that they bought for $3.5 million. And you can see an aerial view of the place here – so I don’t think Mitten’s was “roughing it” too much:

… AND Mother Jones has an in-depth article pretty much documenting Mitten’s voter fraud:

Take-home Message: Repubicans are just scum!
Nameless, I understand that in this case, the basement is bare concrete.
Patty, her residence must be different from his. 😉
As a whole, it looks like the Republicans are beginning to marginalize their own candidates, too! How’s that Tea Party working out for you, GOP? 😈
Johnny, the Tea Party is unruly in the same way t that the original brown-shirts were. If Republicans are successful in their goal to establish a Reich that will last 10,000 years, they will deal with the Tea Party the same way Hitler dealt with the brown-shirts.
The Republicans don’t give a damn about democracy. To them, government is bad and something to be weakened. They use it only as a tool to help enrich themselves and their friends.
Jack, I have to disagree. Republicans do care about democracy. They care s much that the do everything in their power to prevent it.
Every thing they push through that disenfranchises as much as One voter– affects all of us—
Phyllis, that is so true.
If elections could change anything they would be illegal.
Welcome Chris. 🙂
I’m sorry to disagree, but because of elections, I have a progressive Representative and two progressive Senators.
Your attitude plays into the Republican plan.
