GOPP: Grand Old Pussy Posse!

GOPP

I’m not going to talk about how badly Democrats screwed themselves by agreeing to a $39 billion amount.  I’m sure plenty of others will howl and with good reason.  I want to talk about how the government almost shut down over Republican insistence on defunding women’s health services, and how the media has been getting it wrong by claiming that had to do with abortion.  It did not.  It was, and will continue to be, a Republican attempt at social engineering to return women to the chattel status they suffered, before they won women’s rights.

Here’s how media is getting it wrong.

The emergence of abortion as the last and most contentious of the issues that held up the budget deal reached Friday night highlighted the enduring influence of social conservatives within the Republican Party even at a time when the Tea Party movement’s focus on fiscal austerity is getting most of the attention.

The main abortion-related provisions sought by Republicans were stripped out, apparently in return for deeper cuts in federal spending. But the intense push by abortion opponents, including Representatives Christopher H. Smith of New Jersey, Joe Pitts of Pennsylvania and Mike Pence of Indiana, sent a signal that Republicans intend to keep social issues on the front burner as Congress moves on to a further series of battles.

The abortion opponents lost on their effort to restrict money going to Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers as part of the budget deal. But they succeeded in winning agreement for a separate vote on that issue next week — Senate Democrats are sure to defeat it — and in keeping in the budget deal a provision that would restrict abortion financing in Washington… [emphasis added]

Inserted from <NY Times>

Republicans may say that it’s about stopping federal funding for abortion, but they are lying  That’s what Republicans do.  There is no need, because the Hyde Amendment strictly forbids federal funding of abortion already.  Confronted with that, the next Republican lie is that providing abortions is Planned Parenthood’s predominant activity.

Kyl is lying!  The truth is that abortion provision and referral accounts for only 3% of Planned Parenthood’s budget.

I’m not a big Chris Matthews fan, but this time he got it right.

That clearly demonstrates how small a role abortion plays in Planned Parenthood’s activities, and how defunding Planned Parenthood and other women’s health care would dramatically increase the frequency of abortion.

So what is this all about?

Aside from Roe v Wade, and winning the right to vote, the most important factor in women’s struggle for equal rights is the development of oral contraception.  It empowered women with control over both their own sexuality and reproduction.  Now, to the pseudo-Christian followers of Republican Supply-side Jesus (not the real Jesus), this freedom for women plunged our culture into moral turpitude.  No longer could they use the threat of unwanted pregnancy to enforce their abstinence only piety code.

Ladies, they want your freedom back by making access to birth control more difficult.  They want to control not only your reproductive freedom, but also, your sexual behavior.  In effect this makes them the Grand Old Pussy Posse, but humor aside, what they really want is to return you to property status, passing from ownership by father to ownership by husband.

Ladies, this is the Republican Plan for your future.

  1. The GOP (Greedy old Peckers) have always been about subjugating women & minorities. It starts with degrading education, which the Southern factions have done fairly well and follows by denying healthcare & wages causing females to rely on MEN…you know, like it says in the Bible. Unfortunately, the men get caught up in that failed education part too and we end up with a whole host of idiots led by a Boehner!

  2. 3% of Planned Parenthood’s budget may be abortions, but over 36% of the organization’s profits come from abortions.

And they don’t provide “comprehensive womens health services”

Cutting off government funds will not end this organization’s mission. There are plenty of rich pro-abortion liberals who can continue to fund the extermination of minority babies.

    • Silverfiddle, I’m not sure to where to begin.

Your first link is highly deceptive. Plan Parenthood is a non profit. It does not make profit. The 36% given is based on direct revenue from services only and ignores revenue from grants and donations, which are well over 50% of total revenue. In addition it assumes that every abortion client pays $450. They do not. They pay on a sliding scale from $0 to $450. In short, your author cooked the books.

I’m surprised at anyone would have the audacity to present “Bible Girl” as an authority on what does and does not constitute comprehensive health services! LOL! 🙄

Extermination of minority babies? Shame on you. Thou shalt not commit Teabuggery!

Finally, your comment is completely off topic. Are you trying to divert the topic from Republican use of women’s services for pseudo-Christian social engineering?

  3. If we do not band together against the assault on us by lobbyists and special
interests we are doomed. I for one do not believe I have to follow the law if
the law is dictated by those special interests and big business..nor does
Michelle Bachman speak for the nation.

    • Helen, in my youth I committed acts of nonviolent civil disobedience on several occasions, usually sit-ins. I feel it is a valuable tactic with the understanding those who participate recognize and are willing to accept the potential consequences in advance.

  4. It angers me that right-wingers have taken reproductive health care funding hostage in order to appeal to theitr base. If that funding were eliminated, it would be a public health disaster for women AND men.

Give me some hope, TomCat — how do you think the vote will go later this week?

    • Ahab it angers me too, and I fully agree. If everyone keeps their word, the vote should go forward without incident. Democrats will. I make no such guarantee for Republicans.

Of course it w2ill be hostage time again immediately over next month’s deadline on raosing the ceiling on the national debt.

  5. The thing that bothers me is that the objection they’re making to abortion and contraception is religion-based. What the hell has happened to separation of church and state? Aren’t we not supposed to be ruled by the mindless tenets of organized religions? People only feel so polarized by these issues because one side is based on religious value and the other is not. Why can’t an objection to these ridiculous laws be made on the basis of separation of church and state? Why does the state also give favors to churches directly in the form of tax breaks. Why do churches get breaks if there is supposed to be separation of church and state? I could be all wrong here. If so, I’d like to hear what the answer is.

    • Welcome CatJan! 🙂

Republican pseudo-Christians have been ignoring the Establishment Clause for some time, trying to set their piety codes in law. The problem with such an objection is that it is deniable, even though we all know the truth. The tax immunity for churches is one shared by all 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporations, not just churches. 501(c)(3) get the tax break in return for voluntarily not participating in partisan political races. Since most nonprofits deserve the break, the problem is one of enforcement against the many churches in violation of their word.
