One week from today, time runs out on the last budget extension so Republicans are once again holding America hostage with threats of a government shutdown. Rumors of compromise abound, but any deal in which the super-rich and criminal corporations do not share in the sacrifice is no compromise. It is surrender to Republican terrorism. Bernie Sanders is a strong voice for the truth in this.
US Vice President Joe Biden has expressed confidence in budget talks aimed at averting a government shutdown, saying lawmakers had agreed to $73 billion in cuts over the next six months.
"I think we’re making good progress," Biden told reporters after meeting with Senate Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill.
"There is no reason why, with all what’s going on in the world and with the state of the economy, we can’t reach an agreement to avoid a government shutdown, because the bottom line here is we’re working off the same number."
The White House’s Republican foes had originally sought $100 billion in cuts from President Barack Obama’s 2011 budget request, in a bid to fulfill a campaign pledge to reduce spending for federal agencies to pre-Obama levels.
Biden’s figure included the $40 billion in cuts his fellow Democrats had originally sought plus an additional $33 billion… [emphasis added]

If this is true, there is still no agreement about what will be cut, and Republicans have horrific plans for that. None of these cuts would be necessary if Bernie Sanders had his way, as he reveals in a discussion with Ed Schultz.

America cannot afford to balance the budget on the backs of the needy while lavishing welfare on the greedy.

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
Wealthfare is about as popular with this President as it was with the last one. Only a strong progressive Legislature has any chance of making Obama into the President he could have been, and maybe still could be.
JR, I agree. Obama is a great communicator, but the leadership we hoped he would exert has been AWOL.
I am in total agreement with your last statement, TomCat. Whatever became of shared sacrifice, anyway?
RepubliSpeak Dictionary – Shared sacrifice: The rich get half (the left half of the balance sheet), and the poor and middle classes get half (the right side of the balance sheet).
Or shorter definition of “shared sacrifice”:
Working people make the sacrifice – and the rich take their share of it.
The WEATHY’S TAXES Are Too DEM LOW!
If I understand you, I agree.
there needs to be a challenger to barack obama in the democratic primaries next year. the challenger does not need to be hillary clinton. i think it is time for good democrats to accept that the current president does not wish to advance the interests of the democratic party, or of the united states citizenry as a whole. primary season will soon be starting. it would be nice if the candidate chosen to be the presidential nominee for the democratic party was, well, a democrat.
John, if Bernie Sanders were to run as a Democrat, I’d support him in a heartbeat. Otherwise, it would depend on who the contender is.
