The author doesn’t know either, but it’s a high number. Let me be clear. I am not upbraiding closeted Republicans, because they are gay. Politics Plus is an LGBT friendly blog, and I fully support their equal rights up to and including their right to marry. I am upbraiding closeted Republicans because they are hypocrites, and hurtful hypocrites at that.
How many Republicans can you fit in a closet? Evidently, a lot. The "holier-than-thou" party has spent an awful lot of time on their knees in recent years. They haven’t been doing a lot of praying.
In the past, there have been several Republican gay sex scandals; most notably ones attributed to Representative Mark Foley, famed pastor Ted Haggard, and Representative Bob Allen. These scandals have ranged from paying male prostitutes for sex and crystal meth to sending sexual instant messages to teenage boys. Everyone was forced to resign.
After Idaho Republican Senator Larry Craig dropped out of the 2008 elections because he solicited an undercover police officer for sexual activity, it seems like the Republicans keep sending these closeted men to the White House. Nobody’s rushing them to come out, and there are many Democratic politicians who aren’t out. But, the closeted Republicans are all against gay rights.
California Representative David Dreier has been under fire by many gay rights groups because of his hypocrisy and believed homosexuality. His voting record includes supporting the Defense of Marriage Act, voting against gay adoption, and against including homosexuals as a protected class in hate crimes. Dreier also voted against the Matthew Shepard Act and voted against the repeal of the U.S. military’s "Don’t Ask. Don’t Tell" policy.
Dreier is believed to be romantically linked to his chief of staff, Brad W. Smith, who is overpaid by an outrageous $156,000. Whenever Dreier goes on vacation, Smith just so happens to arrive at the same location a day later.
At the age of 29, llinois Representative Aaron Schock has created much media excitement since he is the youngest member of Congress. However, he also stirred up the media because he is believed to be in the closet. He voted against amending federal hate-crimes laws to include crimes where the victims were targeted on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender. He also voted against the repeal of the military’s "Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell" in December 2010.
Former Florida Governor Charlie Crist has been speculated to be gay for a long time. Although he denies the rumors, his various relationships with women—which have fallen conveniently during campaign periods—do not do him any good. But when reporters asked Kelly Heyniger (Crist’s last girlfriend before marrying Carole Rome in the run-up to McCain’s VP pick) what she thought of Crist’s sexual orientation, she responded with "I think I’ll just keep my mouth shut…call me in 10 years and I’ll tell you a story."
Then there’s California State Senator and father of four, Roy Ashburn, who has a 100% anti-gay voting record. He got pulled over and arrested after leaving "Faces," a gay bar in Sacramento…

Once again, I don’t care if they are gay, but I do care that they are so anxious to avoid being outed that they act and legislate hatefully to other LGBT Americans, denying them their rights. Their hypocrisy is doing harm to others. But that is the Republican way, isn’t it?

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
What is your opinion of LGBT Republican groups such as Log Cabin Republicans and GOProud? While these groups do speak up for LGBT people, they’re doing so in the context of a party that traditionally hasn’t been enthusiastic about LGBT equality.
The big mystery is why any of the LCR or GOProud members would even want to support a political party that so totally despises them.
And I agree with Jack below, scratch a ranting homophobe and find a closet case.
And half the Christian Right boycotted CPAC to avoid the horrid fags.
Conservative gays always remind me of the abused dog which, every time it’s kicked, always goes back to its master hoping for better treatment next time — always to be disappointed.
My opinion is that they are fools not to come out from the midst of the bigots that hate them. A gay supporting Republicans is like a black supporting the KKK.
I have had my fill of these socially conservative holier-than-thou Republican Pharisee hypocrites! EVERY REPIBLICAN MUST GO!!!
How long have I been saying that, Jack? 😉
Personally– I don’t care if the object of someone else affection is a purple tree frog— Hypocrisy is a vastly different problem. These men described are Hypocrites,, Liars,-and despicable- No shame in being gay– lots of shame tho in their behavior– They must hate themselves.
You make an excellent point.
I’ll support anyone’s efforts to out all Republican politicians who are gay because I want to know how their lifestyle informs their political decisions in Congress. By the same token, it is blatantly hypocritical to NOT out Barack Obama, who pretends to be a family man while engaging in gay behavior. If you support openness with respect to sexual preferences, then you need to treat The One’s activities the same. Fair is fair.

QUESTION: Has anyone noticed that ever since Obama and Kal Penn broke up, there’s no more state media focus on his workouts or “basketball buddy” sessions?

Welcome Erica.. 🙂
Let’s assume you are right for a second that Obama is gay. I would oppose outing him because he has not used his office to deny gay people their rights. That said, I read the links you left and found absolutely nothing credible there. Seldom have I seen a conspiracy theory so absurd that I get to break out laughing!
