The Arizona massacre dominates the news, and most of it is repeated, with little new since I posted The Blood on Republican Hands yesterday.  I hear that Gabriel Giffords’ condition is as good as can be expected.  There had been little reporting on the other victims.  Here are a few items that I did not cover yesterday.

…Sarah Palin has received renewed criticism for a map her PAC posted last year with gun cross-hairs over the districts of several Democrats who voted for health care reform — including Giffords’. Hours after the shooting, Fox News — which employs Palin — aired scenes from a vigil in Phoenix, but when one mourner appeared to began to call out Palin’s incendiary rhetoric, the Fox feed abruptly went to commercial…

I understand this is one of Fox’s many attempts to hide the truth.  One of her aides has claimed that they the gun sights were surveyors’ marks.  How do you spell B-U-L-L-S-H-I-T?

RT @MMFlint: If a Detroit Muslim put a map on the web w/crosshairs on 20 pols, then 1 of them got shot, where would he b sitting right now? Just asking…

Michael Moore cut right to the heart of the matter.

The Department of Homeland Security was reportedly investigating claims that Loughner, described as a cannabis-smoking loner, was linked to American Renaissance – an extremist anti-government, anti-immigration and anti-Semitic group…

I think this should end Republican claims that being a pot smoker makes the perp a lefty.

Greg Segalini, an uncle of Christina, the 9-year-old victim, told the Arizona Republic that a neighbor was going to the event and invited her along because she had just been elected to the student council and was interested in government.

Christina, who was born on Sept. 11, 2001, was involved in many activities, from ballet to baseball. She had just received her first Holy Communion at St. Odilia’s Catholic Church on in Tucson, Catholic Diocese of Tucson officials told The Arizona Daily Star…

This may be the biggest tragedy of all.

A senior Republican senator, speaking anonymously in order to freely discuss the tragedy, told POLITICO that the Giffords shooting should be taken as a “cautionary tale” by Republicans.

“There is a need for some reflection here – what is too far now?” said the senator. “What was too far when Oklahoma City happened is accepted now. There’s been a desensitizing. These town halls and cable TV and talk radio, everybody’s trying to outdo each other.”… [emphasis added]

What could better illustrate the whole situation?  This senior Republican Senator barely hinted that these people are off the deep end, which is more than  have seen from others.  But whoever he or she is, they are afraid to tell the truth without hiding behind a cloak of anonymity.  Why?  If you are a Republican politician, integrity brings retribution.

  1. Neither Sarah Palin nor Fox must NOT be allowed to just sidestep or dismiss the situation lightly. They bear a very strong responsibility for what has happened and must pay the price! If this teaches Palin and Fox to keep their flaming mouths SHUT just once, the poor little angel’s death won’t totally have been in vain.

Still, a wholly senseless tragedy caused by utterly worthless hyperbole from a very irresponsible and immature source!

  2. “Speaking anonymously in order to freely discuss the tragedy.”

And this is supposed to be republican “leadership”?!? Un-bucking-felievable!

  3. Let us just hope this finally puts an end to Sarah’s political ambitions.

  4. But the fellow who did the shooting, Jared Loughner, was not a Republican, he was a registered Democrat. He was also completely and utterly insane, and should never have been allowed possession of a weapon. He was also obsessed with Gabrielle Giffords.

    America scares me. 🙂

    • Until you can provide a CREDIBLE link to document proving your statement that Loughner was a “registered Democrat” – I’m calling BS.

In fact the Arizona Daily Sun newspaper directly refutes that mendacious claim:

Loughner registered to vote for the first time in 2006, said Chris Roads, Pima County’s registrar of voters. He registered as an independent and last voted in the 2008 general election.

There have been numerous bogus postings by right-wingers trying to deflect this hate-monger’s actions to Liberals, so I believe we’d all be best served by providing DOCUMENTATION when making far-fetched claims.

    • And if you don’t believe that Loughner was NOT a registered Democrat as documented by the Arizona Daily Sun … well, then try the Pulitzer Prize winning Washington Post:

Suspected Tucson gunman Jared Lee Loughner registered as an independent voter in Arizona in the fall of 2006, according to the Pima County Registrar of Voters.

Loughner registered to vote on Sept. 29, 2006, identifying himself as an independent. Records show he voted in the 2006 and 2008 elections but is current listed as “inactive” on the state’s voter roles — meaning that he did not vote in November.

      • Josie, Nameless is completely correct here. The lie that Loughner is a Democrat first appeared, to the best of my knowledge, on the website of Jan Brewer’s Secretary of State. The lie was damage control to deflect responsibility for the hate Brewer and Arizona Republicans have fostered.

  5. A quote too good not to share:

For as long as I can remember, I have heard conservatives blaming everything that is wrong in the universe, from violent crime to declining test scores to teen pregnancy to rude children to declining patriotism to probably athlete’s foot . . . upon Dr. Spock, Hollywood liberals, the abolition of prayer in school, Bill Clinton, the “liberal 1960s,” the teaching of evolution — in other words, upon symbols, rhetoric, cultural norms, and the values expressed by political and media leaders. Yet from the moment when someone gets a gun in their hands, apparently, society ceases to have any influence whatsoever on the outcome and individual responsibility takes hold 100%. Something is driving the tripling of death threats against congressmen (and the concomitant rise in threats against Federal judges and other villains of the right, from Forest Service rangers to climate scientists) and it isn’t the sunspot cycle.

  6. This whole thing is so horrifying. And although the assassin is certainly mentally disturbed, I don’t doubt that the hateful rhetoric that has been filling the airwaves ever since Barack Obama ran for President had some kind of effect on him that spurred him to action. I too hope Palin’s political ambitions will be undone by this but sadly that probably won’t be the case. Her supporters will continue to support her no matter what.

  7. I didn’t want to say anything more until the boobs Beck and Limbaugh took to the air to start the Republican offense in this game of who and why. Base line “We have no culpability” and Beck even told his *ahem* audience~ that he told them this would happen because of the lefts rush to push the country towards Marxism.

’nuff said. Move on to the next story! Good bye young Miss Green may you sleep well in the house of your ancestors.
