In a recent article on the proposed Koran burning, I explained the Republican silence on the issue: “They fear offending the very people whose hatred they have so carefully cultivated for political advantage.”  Really, this never should have become an issue, but whenever a right wing idiot goes beyond the pale, the Republican Ministry of Propaganda, Fox News, jumps in to support them.  Once the right broadcast it, others had to respond.  Before we examine how the Republican Party has caused this tragic outpouring of hatred, here’s the latest:

RepublicanReligiousFreedom The anti-Muslim leader of a tiny Florida church at the center of a global debate says he’s rethinking his decision to cancel burning copies of the Qur’an.

Pastor Terry Jones and his congregation of fewer than 50 members had planned to burn the Muslim holy books Saturday, the ninth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Thursday afternoon he announced he was backing off — the book burning was canceled — saying the leader of the planned Islamic center near Ground Zero in New York City decided to move the mosque and that it was a "sign from God."

"He has agreed to move the location. That, of course, cannot happen overnight, but he has agreed to move that. We felt that that would be a sign that God wanted us to do it. The American people do not want the mosque there, and the Muslims do not want us to burn the Qur’an," Pastor Jones said.

But a local Muslim leader says he only offered to set up a meeting between Jones and New York mosque leaders. Imam Muhammad Musri told reporters he never told Jones the New York cultural center would be moved — nor does he have any authority on or involvement in that project.

The Islamic leader on that New York project, Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf, said he was happy about Jones’s decision to stop the Qur’an burning but added he has no intention of moving the mosque.

"My major concern with moving it is that the headline in the Muslim world will be Islam is under attack in America," Imam Rauf said.

Thursday evening, Jones back-pedaled, saying he was lied to and is rethinking his decision to cancel the book burning… [emphasis added]

Now, Jones never connected his vile campaign with the Muslim Community Center in New York.  I trust he would never have thought of it, but Sarah “Drill Baby Dingbat” Palin and John “Agent Orange” Boehner, backed into a corner over this, tried to score political points by hatefully equating building a place of worship with burning holy books.

Along with pointing out other Republican abuses of 9/11, Rachel Maddow exposes the Republican war on Islam.

We still don’t know whether Jones will actually follow through.  Damage has already been done, because Islam’s Tea Party is already in full propaganda mode over the intent alone.  Jones is just a small-minded Republican wing-nut.  He would not get any attention at all, had not the Republican Party made such hatred “respectable” in Republican circles though their own rhetorical war on Islam, carefully cultivating hatred in their insane quest for power.

They have sown the wind.  Who shall reap the whirlwind?

The good news for our LGBT friends continues.  This district court’s decision took me completely by surprise, and I welcome it.

DADT A federal judge in Riverside declared the U.S. military’s ban on openly gay service members unconstitutional Thursday, saying the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy violates the 1st Amendment rights of lesbians and gay men.

U.S. District Court Judge Virginia A. Phillips said the policy banning gays did not preserve military readiness, contrary to what many supporters have argued, saying evidence shows that the policy in fact had a “direct and deleterious effect’’ on the military.

Phillips said she would issue an injunction barring the government from enforcing the policy. However, the U.S. Department of Justice, which defended “don’t ask, don’t tell” during a two-week trial in Riverside, will have an opportunity to appeal that decision… [emphasis added]

We owe our thanks to all our service people, regardless of sexual orientation.  We have lost far too many qualified and dedicated people to this draconian policy, and I call on the Obama administration to let this decision stand.

Holder Wins Torture Case

When the Obama administration is wrong, I say so, and this time they could not be more wrong.  Early on, as part of his futile attempts at bipartisanship,  Obama opted not to pursue Bush and his Republican minions as the war criminals they are.  His reasoning was that he thought moving forward without recrimination would attract Republican support for meeting America’s needs.  What a mistake that was.  When rats perceive weakness, they attack as a ravenous pack, and that’s what the Republicans did.  Technically it’s the job of the Attorney General to argue for government, even when the cases arise out of the misdeeds of an earlier presidency.  But he did not have to defend with State Secrets doctrine.  I think that had the full truth been publicly exposed in a court of law, that might well have forced Obama’s hand to honor our treaty obligations and prosecute.  So using State Secrets to cover up the crime was a bigger mistake.  The verdict is in.

Twar criminal orn between claims of national security and pleas for redress for torture victims, a federal appeals court reluctantly dismissed a lawsuit Wednesday accusing a Bay Area aviation-planning company of arranging CIA flights of suspected terrorists to overseas dungeons.

Although much of the so-called extraordinary rendition program has been publicly disclosed, including the alleged role of Jeppesen Dataplan of San Jose, allowing the suit to proceed "would present an unacceptable risk of disclosing state secrets," the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco said in a 6-5 ruling.

The ruling is a victory for both President George W. Bush’s administration, which directed the rendition program and acknowledged its existence, and the Obama administration, which promised to curb the program’s excesses but argued that it was too sensitive to be litigated in court.

The American Civil Liberties Union said it would appeal to the Supreme Court. The high court has refused to review two rulings by other appeals courts dismissing suits against the government by men who said they were abducted by the CIA and flown to foreign torture chambers.

"Not a single victim of the Bush administration’s torture program has had his day in court," ACLU lawyer Ben Wizner said… [emphasis added]

Rather than defending this case, Obama should have admitted that he was was wrong, and Prosecuted, Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and the rest for war crimes.

Yesterday I spent the entire morning replying to comments.  Then the phone began to ring, and volunteer work took the rest of the day.  Today’s plan is to catch up on returning visits.  Yesterday was a High Holy Day in the Church of the Ellipsoid Orb, the Beginning of Cycles, AKA opening night.  I thoroughly enjoyed the worship between the Saints and the Vikings.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today it took me 4:30.  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From MSNBC: Sarah Palin has apparently endorsed Delaware conservative Christine O’Donnell in the Delware GOP Senate primary on Tuesday. Rep. Mike Castle has been the establishment choice.

Frankly, I hope the Teabagger beats Castle, but considering what she is most famous for, she might be less uptight, if she let her fingers do the walking. 😉

From Bloomberg: Wealthy Americans have the price of a BMW convertible riding on the outcome of the Congressional battle over tax cuts set to expire this year.

I say that America’s poor and middle classes have contributed far too many BMW convertibles to the Republican rich.

From Wonkette: Arizona’s Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio is famous among Teabaggers or something for being a bigot and following Arizona’s bigot law enforcement law to the extreme, for which the feds sued him. So now, naturally, he is running for president, even though he is older than John McCain. Or rather he is HINTING this, in the most explicit way possible, in New Hampshire.

Picture this… Arpaio/Angle 2012.

This just in!

9prop8 The state Supreme Court refused to come to the aid of California’s embattled ban on same-sex marriage Wednesday, denying a conservative group’s request to order Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Attorney General Jerry Brown to appeal a federal judge’s ruling striking down the voter-approved measure.

The state officials’ decision not to argue in support of Proposition 8 has raised questions about whether anyone is legally qualified to defend it in court. The Pacific Justice Institute filed suit last week, arguing that the California Constitution requires Brown to defend the state’s laws.

A state appeals court dismissed the suit without a hearing, and the state’s high court denied review Wednesday without comment.

It will now be up to a federal appeals court, and possibly the U.S. Supreme Court, to decide whether Prop. 8’s sponsors have legal standing…

Just when it looked bleakest, the latest Gallup generic ballot poll shifted back to a dead heat between Democratic and Republican candidates.  While not as positive as it sounds, at least it offers hope to save our nation from disaster.

9poll Say goodbye to the 10-point lead Republicans enjoyed in last week’s Gallup poll of generic congressional preferences.

Gallup’s weekly tracking poll of the generic ballot, a key predictor of voters’ actions in elections, showed Democrats and Republicans tied at 46 percentdown from the 10-point lead the GOP held just a week ago.

The shift, the polling group noted, marked the first time in five weeks where Republicans didn’t hold some sort of advantage over Democrats. Last week’s 51-41 percent lead was heralded as "unprecedented" for Republicans.

The survey, which tracks voters’ preference in a matchup of a generic Democratic and Republican candidates for Congress, still shows a hearty enthusiasm gap for the GOP. The party still leads Democrats by 25 percent in voter enthusiasm, and the GOP leads independents by 22 percent in the same measure… [emphasis added]

The main area where we lag behind in enthusiasm is disgruntled progressives.  So to my disgruntled progressive friends, I say this.  I understand and share your frustration.  We did not get everything we wanted.  But think what we would have lost had McConJob, Mooseolini, and the Republican Regime remained in power.  I believe Obama genuinely cares about the needs of the poor and middle classes, while the Republicans care for millionaires only.  Please don’t give up now.  Do not put yourselves in the position of looking back on this election and knowing you could have helped prevent the catastrophe of Republican rule.

In a brilliant change of direction, Barack Obama ripped into the Republican party yesterday.  Instead of focusing on one of the obvious loons, he singled out the House Minority Leader and would-be Speaker, John Boehner.  This is way past due!

BonerOrange President Obama laid out a sweeping argument for retaining Democrats and punishing Republicans in the upcoming midterm elections, calling on voters Wednesday to reject economic policies advanced by the GOP that he said favor millionaires at the expense of struggling families.

Obama took the unusual step of describing the financial and medical struggles he, First Lady Michelle Obama and their families have faced, personalizing a deeply political debate as he sought to position himself firmly on the side of middle-class families.

The president proposed $180 billion in new construction and tax credits meant to spur investment and research. But the address, at a community college near Cleveland, also represented an intensifying campaign by Obama to discredit Republicans and craft a road map for Democrats confronting a challenging election cycle that may cost them scores of congressional seats.

Obama singled out an Ohio Republican, House Minority Lseader John A. Boehner, an architect of a GOP strategy that Obama said aims to obstruct his agenda and to restore policies from the George W. Bush era, including tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans… [emphasis added]

In response, Republicans proposed a two point plan to help balance the budget.  Cut domestic spending to 2008 levels and freeze taxes at current levels, a plan they called bipartisan.  Bipartisan my ass!  This translates to cut services to the poor and middle classes, and extend the Bush tax cuts for the rich.  This new plan is same as the old plan and will add $hundreds of billions to the deficit.

Ed Schultz and Sen. Byron Dorgan had a field day with this.

This is the Obama I feared I might never see again.  I hope, at last, that Obama has seen how utterly foolish he was to pursue a bipartisan approach for so long.

Then the US military decided to look the other way over corruption in Afghanistan, I objected.  But even that was not enough for Hamid Karzai, the former Bush puppet, appointed because he worked for the US energy industry.

9karzai Afghan President Hamid Karzai intends to impose rules restricting international involvement in anti-corruption investigations, a move that U.S. officials fear will hobble efforts to address the endemic graft that threatens support for his administration in Afghanistan and the United States.

Karzai wants to circumscribe the role of American and other foreign law enforcement specialists in two key anti-corruption organizations in the Interior Ministry by not allowing them to have direct involvement in investigations.

"The management will be Afghan, and the decision-makers will be Afghan, and the investigators will be Afghan," Mohammad Umer Daudzai, Karzai’s chief of staff, said in a telephone interview Wednesday. Foreign advisers, most of whom work for the U.S. Justice Department, will be limited to "training and coaching, but not decision-making," he said… [emphasis added]

Karzai must have learned well from Bush, because he’s fo0llowiung the Republican example, putting his own foxes in charge of investigating the chicken coop.  This move is bound to make his government even more unpopular with Afghanis.  Since strong popular support for the client government is a necessary element to any COIN (counter insurgency) effort, I say again that Petraeus strategy in Afghanistan cannot succeed as long as Karzai is in power.
