In 1964, Northern Democrats and Progressive Republicans teamed up against Dixiecrats and conservative Republicans to pass the Civil Rights Act.  The Dixiecrats jumped ship, and teamed up with Conservative Republicans who have been working ever since to drive progressive politicians out of the Republican Party.  They have achieved that goal.  Starting with Goldwater, Republicans have adopted the Southern Strategy, a plan to play on white fear and Racism and disenfranchise  black voters.  It was succeeding until the election of Barack Obama. Now Republicans have become so desperate, they have expanded the Southern Strategy to include Latinos.  They have even gone so far as to run an ad trying to convince Latinos to disenfranchise themselves.  Fortunately, Univision has rejected the ad.

20univision Earlier today, ThinkProgress reported that Latinos for Reform — a Republican 527 group — purchased an $80,000 buy on Univision to air ads urging Nevada Latino voters not to vote. We urged Univision not to air the ads. The network, which heads the non-partisan Latino civic participation campaign, Ya Es Hora, has decided to do the right thing and not broadcast the ads. A Univision spokesperson told ThinkProgress:

Univision will not be running any spots from Latinos for Reform related to voting. It is also important to clarify that while Mr. Robert de Posada has on occasion provided political commentary on Univision, representing one of various points of views, he is not in any way affiliated with Univision. Univision prides itself on promoting civic engagement and our extensive national campaigns encourage Hispanics to vote.

Univision’s decision likely has something to do with the fact that Robert de Posada wants to tell their viewers that the best way for Latinos to exercise their political power in support of immigration reform is to stay at home this November — a message that runs counter to its own GOTV efforts. ThinkProgress did some digging into de Posada’s group, and here’s what we found.

To begin with, the group’s 8872 form lists the same P.O. Box number as the one belonging to the Admiral Roy F. Hoffmann Foundation [fascists delinked], an organization founded by the chairman of Swift Boat Veterans for Truth (SBVT), Roy F. Hoffmann. For those who don’t recall, SBVT was another 527 group formed during the 2004 elections aimed at opposing Sen. John Kerry’s (D-MA) presidential bid by distorting and misrepresenting his war record… [emphasis original]

I commend Univision for their wise decision.

Rachel Maddow has put together a fantastic piece on Republican racism.

Long term, this is a can’t lose situation for Democrats, if they play their cards smartly.  Soon minorities will collectively be a majority in the US, a fact that could well bring the death knell for the Republicans, because they have thrown minority voters under the bus to become a white party, save a few opportunistic token traitors like Michael “they sent me to Guam” Steele, Alan “biker boy” Keyes, Clarence “I’m a Teabagger too” Thomas, and Tom “I’m trying to be a gringo” Tancredo.  The possibility for a coalition between minority voters, progressives, environmentalists, and labor awaits us.

Medium term, we need to replace DINOs with people who will represent such a coalition.

Short term, we need to keep Republicans out of power long enough to prevent them from establishing a new Republican Reich in which fair elections will no longer be possible.  It’s up to you.

Economics 101 for Voters

Posted by at 2:13 am  Politics

I know.  The mere mention of economics is sufficient to prompt most voters to roll their eyes and run for the exits.  It’s pretty dry stuff.  However, Obama’s new Head of the Council of Economic Advisors  actually makes it palatable and simple enough for Teabaggers and Regressives (the left wing’s equivalent of Teabaggers) to understand, if only they were open to do so.

Wealth 2004 Even by this city’s not-so-glamorous standards, Austan D. Goolsbee would seem to be an unlikely candidate for Web video star.

But Mr. Goolsbee, the earnest young economist and occasional stand-up comic who was named last month to lead the White House Council of Economic Advisers, has gamely stepped into the spotlight.

Armed with a felt-tip marker and a white board, Mr. Goolsbee is the earnest pitchman in a series of Web videos the White House is using to convey the president’s message on economic policy in plainspoken terms.

The videos, which have a made-at-home quality, have been the subject of some Internet buzz, especially after the first one — about the debate over extending the Bush-era tax cuts — was highlighted last week on “The Colbert Report” on Comedy Central.

In the second video, a four-minute segment posted on the White House blog on Tuesday, Mr. Goolsbee stands before a hand-made bar graph showing private sector job losses and gains since September 2007. He uses the V-shaped chart to point out that the economic free fall has been turned into a recovery, even if the results are still unsatisfying… [emphasis added]

Here is the first video:

And here is the second:

The first makes it clear just who it is that Republicans represent.  Despite their lies about reducing the deficit, They want to increase it to provide more welfare for the rich.

The second proves that, despite Republican lies to the contrary, Democratic achievements toward economic recovery, in the face of unprecedented Republican attempts to sabotage our economy for political gain, have been nothing short of remarkable.  More is needed, but the only way to get more is to put Democrats in office.

Republicans govern only for the benefit of criminal corporations and the richest 1%.  That’s why both are spending untold secret $millions to put them in office, and if Democrats were no different, as Regressives claim, big money would consider their secret money campaign unnecessary.

Yesterday I went out to talk to a minister about using her church for a support group we are forming.  I did catch up on comments after returning home.  Today is up in the air, because I plan to attend the Kitzhaber/Obama rally this evening.  I expect a  mob scene that will test my stamina  to the limit, so I need to rest beforehand.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today it took me 4:38.  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From Christian Science Monitor: A federal judge in California refused on Tuesday to postpone a worldwide injunction issued last week blocking enforcement of the Defense Department’s "don’t ask, don’t tell" policy banning gays from serving openly in the military.

Good news.  Ne3xt step will be the Ninth.

From Think Progress: Among the many lies told by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce recently, chief Chamber lobbyist Bruce Josten said that his organization’s foreign affiliates, called AmChams, are only “comprised of American companies doing business abroad in those countries.” In fact, the Chinese AmCham is comprised of Chinese firms like Northern Light Venture Capital; the AmCham in Russia is comprised of Russian state-run companies like VTB Bank; and, the AmCham of Abu Dhabi is comprised of UAE state-run oil companies.

The ties between the AmChams and the U.S. Chamber are deep. In addition to sharing staff members, the Chinese AmCham has worked closely with the U.S. Chamber and the Chinese government to sponsor a series of seminars in America to teach American businesses how to outsource jobs to China (called the China Grassroots Program). [emphasis added]

If Democrats are just as bad as Republicans, as the regressive wing of the left claims, then why are these people spending so much to put Republicans in office?

Tom122007 Many of you may find this announcement quite a surprise.  Have I been guzzling Republican Kool-Aid?  Certainly not!  Am I on the verge of commitment to an institution to be treated for insaniTEA?  God forbid! Am I angry at Democrats?  I am at some of them, but that has nothing to do with it.  Have I decided to vote for a third party?  No.  While I prefer a more social democratic platform than what the Democrats offer, I would not want to waste my vote on a candidate with no chance of election, especially when the Republicans present such a threat to our livelihood, our human rights, our Constitution, our standing in the world, and what’s left about our society, that I hold dear, that Republicans have not already destroyed.  I have not changed my position that Democrats, flawed though they may be, are a far better option than Republicans, who govern exclusively for the benefit of criminal corporations and the richest 1%.  So why am a refusing to vote for Democrats this year?  The answer may surprise you.

Here in Oregon, we have vote by mail.  It’s an excellent system.  The only way I have seen Republicans able to cheat the system is to get alcoholic transients to register and trade their signature on pre-filled ballots for beer or wine.  I broke up such an exchange in 2004, but the effects of that are far less that Republican election day scams in other parts of the country.  I mailed my ballot today, and voted for Ron Wyden (D) for Senator, David Wu (D) for Representative, John Kitzhaber (D) for Governor. Ted Wheeler (D) for Treasurer, and Mary Nolan (D) for state Representative.  These are the only partisan races in my district this year.

So the reason I will vote for no Democrats this year is simple.  It’s illegal for me to vote twice.  The Republicans claim that we fraudulently vote over and over again is a lie.  A much as I would like more, I only get one vote per race.  I’ve done my part.  It’s your turn.

Republicans love to hate that big government, socialist, stimulus program that has saved millions of jobs and created millions more.  More stimulus spending is desperately needed, because the damage done to our economy by the Republican recession was worst than most imagined.  Not only are Republicans blocking attempts to provide more, but also, they are calling for redirecting unspent stimulus funds to more tax cuts for the uber-rich.  But when they think nobody is watching, those same Republicans are craving to be stimulated.

19stimulateMe Rep. Pete Sessions, the firebrand conservative from Dallas, Texas, has relentlessly assailed the Democratic-passed stimulus law as a wasteful "trillion dollar spending spree" that was "more about stimulating the government and rewarding political allies than growing the economy and creating jobs."

But that didn’t stop the Republican lawmaker from reaching his hand out behind the scenes to seek stimulus money for the suburb of Carrollton after the camera lights went dark and the GOP campaign against the 2009 stimulus law quieted down.

The affluent city’s rail project is "shovel-ready," Sessions wrote Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood in February, urging his cabinet agency to give "full and fair consideration" to the city’s request for $81 million in stimulus money, according to a copy of the letter obtained by the Center for Public Integrity. Ironically, his letter suggested the project would create jobs, undercutting the very public argument he has made against the stimulus.

"Carrollton’s project will create jobs, stimulate the economy, improve regional mobility and reduce pollution," the lawmaker wrote.

When asked about the letter, Sessions suggested to the Center that he did not want his "strong, principled objection to the bill to prevent me" from getting his congressional district its share of the massive spending pot.

Sen. Jeff Sessions speaking at the American For Prosperity’s No Stimulus rally.

Sessions was hardly alone.

Scores of Republicans and conservative Democrats who voted against the $787 billion American Recovery and Reinvestment Act subsequently wrote letters requesting funds for projects in a massive, behind-the-scenes letter-writing and phone call campaign, documents obtained by the Center show.

Those asking for money include Tea Party favorites like freshman Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown and Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., former presidential candidates Ron Paul and John McCain and Republican congressional leaders like Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Rep. Mike Pence of Indiana… [emphasis added]

Keith Olbermann discusses this hypocritical behavior with Ezra Klein.

Since these Republican letters all give creating jobs as one of the reasons for requesting the money, we have solid proof that Republican claims that the stimulus creates no jobs is a lie.  It also demonstrates that they have no desire to be free of government spending.  If elected, Republicans will increase the deficit while slashing the safety net, because Republicans govern exclusively for the benefit of criminal corporations and the richest 1%.

What is Holder Thinking?!!?

Posted by at 1:24 am  Politics
Oct 192010

I supported Holder’s decision to appeal over DADT, because the Attorney General in required to defend the law of the land, however disagreeable that may be.  In the case of Kidd v Ashcroft, this issue does not apply.  Holder’s decision to appeal the decision from the Ninth is thoroughly reprehensible.

19kidd The Supreme Court agreed Monday to decide whether former Attorney General John Ashcroft may be sued by an American detained for 16 days. It’s a case that a lower court judge said tests “the excesses of a powerful national government.”

The lawsuit the justices decided to hear concerns whether Ashcroft could be held personally liable for the 2005 detention of an American Islamic convert who was never charged.

Kansas native Abdullah al-Kidd was detained in 2003 at Dulles International Airport near Washington, D.C., as he headed to Saudi Arabia to embark on an Islamic studies program. Detained on a “material witness” statute, he said he was housed naked and “was treated worse than murderers.”

“The facts alleged in al-Kidd’s complaint are chilling, and serve as a cautionary tale to law-abiding citizens of the United States who fear the excesses of a powerful national government as did many members of the Founding Generation,” Judge Milan D. Smith Jr. wrote (.pdf) in March, when the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals refused to rehear its 2009 ruling in favor of al-Kidd.

The material-witness statute, which has increasingly been invoked following the 2001 terror attacks, is designed to allow the government to hold somebody to testify at trial if the government believes the witness may flee. Al-Kidd was never called to testify.

When released from prison, al-Kidd’s travel was restricted, his passport was taken, and he was required to report to probation officers for more than a year. He sued.

Last year, the San Francisco-based appeals court ruled in favor of al-Kidd, saying the material-witness statute at issue could not be used to investigate or detain individuals without probable cause (.pdf)… [emphasis added]

Inserted from <Wired>

This case is not about defending the law of the land.  It’s about protecting a war criminal from liability for his abuse of his power against a US citizen.  In fact, Ashcroft lied to the courts to obtain the material witness warrant.  The effect of overturning the Ninth’s correct decision could be catastrophic for civil liberties, because it would give government the effective right to detain and abuse any citizen at any time, with or without cause.

The best we can hope for is a draw.  Elena Kagan must recuse herself, because had input on the case as Solicitor General.  The fascist four will goose step behind Ashcroft.  If the other four disagree the decision will be a 4-4 tie.  In that case SCOTUS would uphold the decision from the Ninth in a per curiam decision, one that sets no precedent.

Yesterday I was busy with personal things most of the day, so I did not get a chance to reply to comments or return visits.  Today I hope to catch up on comments, but that’s iffy.  I’m going out to visit  a potential venue for a 7th Step support group for former prisoners we’re starting up.  Also I’m running short on sleep, because Providence Home Services woke me up from a dead sleep at 8 PM to tell me they were delivering the oxygen concentrator they had promised to deliver to me by Noon today, but stood me up for the second time.  I told them to tale a long …um… walk off a short pier.

I climbed back to the middle of the pack! 😀

Short Takes:

From NY Times: A federal district judge in California said Monday that she is inclined to deny the government’s request to allow the Pentagon to enforce its “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy on gay and bisexual members of the military while her injunction against it is being appealed. “My tentative ruling is to deny the application for a stay,” Judge Virginia A. Phillips said at a hearing on the government’s request, according to Reuters. She is expected to issue a ruling to that effect on Tuesday.

I hope so!  I’d love to see no more expelled.

From TPM: Sharron Angle now has an interesting explanation for her recent campaign ads on immigration, which have prominently featured images of Latinos labeled as "illegal aliens": They might not be Latinos, or even "illegal aliens" from Mexico at all — they might be terrorists sneaking in from the Canadian border.

Damn those brown skinned Canadians!  Obtuse went on to say that the they looked more like Asians, as though that’s somehow more acceptable that Latino.

From Me: From the look of the polls, which I take with a ton of salt, I’d call the Senate 51 Democrats, 47 Republicans, and 2 too close to guess.  Unlike most Pollsters, I’m correctly counting LIEberman as a Republican.  The House is anyone’s guess.

Watching Republican candidates this year, we have become accustomed to a wide variety of outrageous expression, running the gamut from inane to insane.  But even within this set of misfits, this man is just vile.

18ken-Buck On Sunday’s "Meet the Press," Tea Party darling and Colorado Republican Senate candidate Ken Buck made the outrageous claims that being gay was "a lifestyle choice" and that a case of rape was nothing more than "buyer’s remorse."

When asked by "Meet the Press" moderator David Gregory, Buck said he believed that being gay was a lifestyle choice; asked whether sexual orientation is determined at birth, Mr. Buck replied: “I think birth has an influence on it like alcoholism and other things, but I think that basically you have a choice.”

Adding insult to injury, Buck also expressed no regrets about his four-year-old characterization of an alleged rape as "buyer’s remorse."

Insisting that being gay is a “lifestyle choice,” simply disqualifies Buck from public office. Buck’s insensitivity towards rape victims only adds fuel to the fire, and speaks volumes against Buck serving the state in any capacity… [emphasis added]

Inserted from <Portland Examiner>

That gayness is a lifestyle choice is a standard Republican lie.  The proof that sexual orientation is innate is rock solid, so that is just run of the mill Republican hate.  But the definition of rape as buyer’s remorse, and his refusal to recant on that statement, is so far beyond the pale that he is not fit for human association.
