Republicans will take control of the House in January with no new ideas, keeping their specific plans secret.  Their one overriding promise is to reduce the deficit.  Now that the elections are over, they are starting to talk, what they want first has become clear, and that will add a huge chunk to the deficit.  We also can’t forget the things they are not talking about, but that we know are on the way.  They must be stopped.

GOPgreedIncoming House Majority Leader Eric Cantor says [Fox Propaganda delinked] that unless President Obama supports permanently cutting taxes on income over $250,000, nobody should get any tax cuts at all.

WALLACE:  If the president says, "Extend the tax cuts for the middle class permanently and I’ll agree to a two- or three-year extension for tax cuts for the wealthy," could you buy that?

CANTOR: First of all, Chris, let’s set the record straight. No one’s getting a tax cut here. One of two things is going to happen January 1. That is your rates are either going to — either going to go up or they’re going to stay the same. So this notion that somehow we are passing tax cuts is just not true.

And so, no, I am not for decoupling the rates, because all that says to people looking to go back in and put capital to work and invest to create jobs is, "You’re going to get taxed on any return that you can expect."

Cantor knows that we’re really talking about two different tax cuts — one that applies to every taxpayer, regardless of income, and one that only applies only to taxpayers with income over $250,000. Cantor also knows there isn’t much support for extending the "wealthy-only" tax cut and that unless he can hold the universal tax cut hostage, he doesn’t have the leverage he needs to get get the upper-income tax cut signed into law. That’s why he opposes decoupling the high-income tax cuts from the tax cuts that go to everybody (including high income earners, albeit only on their first $250,000 of income)… [emphasis added]

Of course Cantor is lying.  I need my tax cut.  I’m on a fixed income and everything is going up.  But I’d rather go without than see the country harmed by more Republican welfare for millionaires.  Rachel Maddow and small business expert, JJ Ramberg debunk the lies.

It is clear that Democrats will have to protect the poor and middle classes, especially from another key item on the Republican agenda.  Rachel and CFPB head, Elizabeth Warren discuss Republican plans to stop her from protecting Main Street from Wall Street’s predatory practices.

But Republicans don’t want basic fairness.  They want the criminal corporations they represent free to harvest the remaining assets of the poor and middle classes.

Sadly, with all Obama’s continued talk of compromise, I am not confident that we can count on him to hold the line, especially since Geithner and Bernanke have an influence on him.  Therefore the Republicans must be stopped before their measures reach Obama’s desk, and that means doing so in the Senate.  Sadly, that will not happen if Harry Reid is Majority Leader.  He’ll cave-in, like he has so many times before.  Click below.

We have two different criminal justice systems here in the US, especially in communities of, by and for the very rich, because they are usually Republican and therefore believe that the very rich have entitlements the rest of us lack.

9banksterA Morgan Stanley wealth manager will not face felony charges for a hit-and-run because Colorado prosecutors don’t want him to lose his job.

Martin Joel Erzinger, who manages more than $1 billion in assets for Morgan Stanley in Denver, is being accused only of a misdemeanor for allegedly driving his Mercedes into a cyclist and then fleeing the scene, Colorado’s Vail Daily reports. The victim, Dr. Steven Milo, whom Erzinger allegedly hit in July, suffered spinal cord injuries, bleeding from his brain and, according to his lawyer Harold Haddon, "lifetime pain."

But District Attorney Mark Hurlbert says it wouldn’t be wise to prosecute Erzinger — doing so might hurt his source of income. Here’s Vail Daily:

"Felony convictions have some pretty serious job implications for someone in Mr. Erzinger’s profession, and that entered into it," Hurlbert said. "When you’re talking about restitution, you don’t want to take away his ability to pay."

"We have talked with Mr. Haddon and we had their objections, but ultimately it’s our call," Hurlbert said.

Milo, who lives in New York City with his wife and kids, is furious about the dropped charges, Vail Daily says. The doctor’s line of work, like Erzinger’s, has been threatened by the incident. "His ability to deal with the physical challenges of his profession — liver transplant surgery — has been seriously jeopardized," Haddon, Milo’s lawyer, said. Here’s Milo, from the Vail Daily:

"Mr. Erzinger struck me, fled and left me for dead on the highway," Milo wrote. "Neither his financial prominence nor my financial situation should be factors in your prosecution of this case."

And a big hat tip to Lisa G, our resident Princess, for sending me this.

One might argue that both are rich, but Erzinger is both local rich and much richer than Milo, so his money tips the Republican scales of justice.

The Next Third Party?

in As a rule, I have a problem with third parties, although I often agree with their goals.  Historically, they have tended to help Republicans achieve elected office, and Republicans often finance their inclusion on the ballot to split the lefty vote.  So I would not vote for a third party candidate, unless first, I support their candidate’s positions, and second, either the candidate has a solid chance to win, or the Democrat in the race is just to heinous to support.  Here’s a third party that could never get my vote, but that I would love to see formed.

9rubio

Today, Cindy and Mike Jacobs of Generals International held a webcast to discuss the meaning of last week’s elections and Cindy proclaimed that despite the Republican wins, the nation would see the rise of a third party based on God’s righteousness that will be led by people like Marco Rubio as proof:

I have to admit that I had not noticed that, but Jacobs is correct…

Aren’t third parties that split the right-wing vote a great idea?

Yesterday I kept up to date with comments and returned a bunch of long overdue visits.  I didn’t visit my entire blogroll, but they don’t make days long enough for that. Today I hope to keep up with comments.  It’s a medical mayhem day with X-Rays, lung function tests and doctor visits, so I’ll be running like a Teabagger candidate at a reporters’ convention.

I’m pleased to report that I won in all three leagues.  But those dang Republicans!! Green with envy

Short Takes:

From HJuffington Post: A federal judge issued a temporary restraining order Monday to block a new amendment to the Oklahoma Constitution that would prohibit state courts from considering international or Islamic law when deciding cases.

U.S. District Judge Vicki Miles-LaGrange handed down the order after an Oklahoma man filed a lawsuit claiming the amendment stigmatized his religion and would invalidate his will, which he said is partially based on Islamic Law, also known as Sharia Law.

It will be interesting to watch this proceed, but I had hoped it would be on something that is more an affront to their hateful bigotry.

From Portland Examiner: Michigan Assistant Attorney General Andrew Shirvell has been fired by Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox after creating a blog attacking and harassing gay University of Michigan college student and Michigan Student Assembly (MSA) President Chris Armstrong.

Shirvell is the creator of an over the top homophobic blog titled "Chris Armstrong Watch," On the blog Shirvell has accused the MSA president of promoting a “radical homosexual agenda,” and of being a Nazi and Satan’s representative on thee assembly.

How typical for a Republican Theocon to be committing a hate crime, violating the rights of someone whose rights he has sworn to defend.

From McClatchy DC: President Barack Obama ended his three-day trip to India Monday with a call for raising the world’s biggest democracy to global power status by granting it a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.

I disagree with this move.  I have no beef with India, per se, but no nation that has refused to sign and abide by the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty should have a seat on the Security council.  Additionally, should the cold war between India and Pakistan turn hot, this would give India a veto against sanctions.

dumptheleghoundHere is the online petition I promised you to replace Reid with a Majority Leader that has a spine. For me, the straws that broke the camel’s back were Harry Reid’s refusal to bring key legislation to the floor and cutting a deal with Republicans to prevent Obama from making recess appointments before the election break.  Far too many times I have groaned, screamed, and cried, because every time Republicans even hinted at opposition, Reid humped a few Republican legs in hopes of getting a vote or too, and when he couldn’t, whined, rolled over and played dead.

Harry Reid has been such a weak majority leader that voters have come to think of Democratic as the party of spineless weakness.  We need a majority leader who will fight for progressive values, not cower in fear at the first threat of Republican opposition.  Please join us in petitioning your Democratic Senator(s) to replace Harry Reid with a Senator with the courage to stand fast against Republican assaults on our Constitution, our freedom, and our well being.

Click Here to help replace Harry Reid!

I bit my tongue and held off to give one of you the opportunity to be the first to sign it. Franken won the poll here, but has no chance in his first term.  You can suggest a replacement in your comment on the perition itself.

Please email this to your friends, and post it on your blogs and wherever you go.

The last time Republicans shut down the US Government, they were blamed for the damage it did and rightly do.  With nothing new to offer, they are returning to the same policies that caused the current mess, and threating a government shut down, if Obama refuses accede to their demands.  To avoid their previous failure, they are ramping up their noise machine to blame Obama in advance.

gopVision

In an interview with Fox News Sunday this morning, Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA), the #2 Republican in the House, threatened to take the nation’s economy hostage if President Obama does not comply with House GOPers’ as yet undefined demands. When asked if he would take a government shutdown on forcing the United States to default on its debt off the table, Cantor responded that it would somehow be President Obama’s fault if House Republicans press this agenda

…Watch it:

It’s difficult to exaggerate just how harmful a shutdown or default would be for the United States and its economy. A “shutdown” occurs when Congress fails to appropriate money to fund the federal agencies. As a result, nearly every federal employee is sent home, including the officials who cut Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid checks. In other words, by threatening a shutdown, Cantor is holding the incomes of millions of American seniors hostage unless Obama complies with his petty demands.

The consequences of a default would be even worse — indeed, if a shutdown amounts to a hostage crisis, a default is the equivalent of shooting the hostage.  A default could occur if the House GOP refuses to authorize the Treasury to issue new bonds in order to cover the interest on the nation’s existing debt, and the results of such a default would be catastrophic.

If the world’s safest investment — US Treasury bonds — were essentially converted into junk bonds overnight, it would trigger a worldwide financial panic… [emphasis added]

We must start now to get out the word that,m if they do these things, it will be because Republicans believe that compromise can only happen when it’s all their way all the time.

New Military Policies?

Posted by at 2:18 am  Politics
Nov 082010

When Obama was running for office, his staff included many capable progressive advisors.  When elected, however, I think the ‘business as usual” Democrats warned him that his team of progressive outsiders did not have the inside credibility to get anything done, that he would become like Jimmy Carter, a President who accomplished little, despite being the most honorable President in my lifetime.  Frankly, I think Obama fell for their line and installed insiders from the Clinton and Bush camps in key positions instead of the progressive advisors that helped him win the White House.  One such is Robert Gates at Defense.  Gates has never cleaned house, and most of the civilian chain of command under him, as well as the military command structure, are holdovers from the Bush Regime.  That may change.

8pentagonWith critical decisions ahead on the war in Afghanistan, President Obama is about to receive an unusual opportunity to reshape the Pentagon’s leadership, naming a new defense secretary as well as several top generals and admirals in the next several months.

It is a rare confluence of tenure calendars and personal calculations, coming midway through Mr. Obama’s first term and on the heels of an election that challenged his domestic policies. His choices could have lasting consequences for his national security agenda, perhaps strengthening his hand over a military with which he has often clashed, and are likely to have an effect beyond the next election, whether he wins or loses.

That is all the more reason that Mr. Obama’s choices are certain to face scrutiny in a narrowly divided Senate, whose Republican leadership has declared itself intent on defeating him.

Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates has said he plans to retire next year, while the terms of four members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff are scheduled to end: Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman; Gen. James E. Cartwright, the vice chairman; Gen. George W. Casey Jr., the Army chief; and Adm. Gary Roughead, the chief of naval operations.

Andrew J. Bacevich, a retired Army officer who is a professor of history and international relations at Boston University, said this round of replacements, coming after two years of difficult and sometimes intense wrangling over how to carry on the war in Afghanistan, “is particularly important, and is likely to prove particularly difficult.”

“The challenge facing the president,” Mr. Bacevich said, “will be to identify leaders who will provide him with disinterested advice, informed by a concern for the national interest, and, in doing so, to avoid either the appearance or the reality of politicizing the senior leadership.”

At the top of the new pantheon of military power, the president needs a heavyweight to succeed Mr. Gates, an unexpected holdover from the Bush administration who stayed longer than many expected to become perhaps the most influential member of the Obama cabinet.

White House officials say the president is not prepared to announce any decisions on his new slate of Pentagon and military leaders for next year… [emphasis added]

Inserted from <NY Times>

Obama has an opportunity here to mend fences with the people who put him in the White House, and we should watch carefully (and influence) whom he chooses.  However, we know Senate Republicans will try to block any appointees to the left of Goebbels, making filibuster reform imperative, and highlighting the need for a Majority Leader in the Senate who will do more than hump the Republican leg, whine, and roll over.

From San Francisco Chronicle: San Francisco police have arrested an election worker but have not recovered 75 ballots he allegedly stole from a polling station, police said Wednesday.

Nicholas, formerly of Kentfield and San Rafael, is a computer repairman and registered Republican.

There is nothing Republicans won’t do to steal an election.

From NY Times (H/T Lisa G): Some Republican lawmakers — still reveling in Tuesday’s statewide election sweep — are proposing an unprecedented solution to the state’s [Texas] estimated $25 billion budget shortfall: dropping out of the federal Medicaid program.

Bastards!

From MSNBC:Keith Olbermann’s suspension from msnbc television for donating to three Democratic campaigns will end this coming Tuesday, NBC announced Sunday night.

We did it.  Bold progressives main petition had over 300,000 signatures.  Based on our exit clicks, around 450 of them came from right here.  MSNBC had to close theur switchboard because they could not handle the volume of calls. We can feel proud that we did our part.
