I bet you think that this is another article about the Tax Capitulation Act, right? Wrong! Republican greed on behalf of the uber-rich goes well beyond the cloistered corridors of Washington, DC. For example, by following Republican doctrine to the letter, an elected official has managed to completely teabugger a Long Island county.
Apparently, lowering taxes doesn’t fix every single problem, including cancer.
Facing a huge budget deficit when he took office in January, Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano did not impose a hiring freeze. He did not stop borrowing to subsidize some of the richest school districts in the country. He did not eliminate the Police Department’s beloved mounted unit.
Instead, Mr. Mangano, a Republican who won one of the first upsets of the Tea Party era, did what he had promised: He cut taxes, adding $40 million to the county’s deficit, which has since reached nearly $350 million.
Now, with its bonds suddenly downgraded and a state oversight agency preparing to seize its checkbook and credit cards, Nassau is on the verge of a full-fledged fiscal crisis.
I bet Mr. Mangano screeched a ton about the deficit, even as he plotted his tax-cut fix all. Not to worry, though — he can fix everything by breaking the unions!… [emphasis added]

Here we have a perfect example of the effects of Republican financial doctrine: cut taxes for the rich and continue welfare for the rich. Now that I think of it, maybe this article should have been about the Tax Capitulation Act!

TC it seems to be in keeping with their talking points, one of them blaming much of the financial crisis on unions. Private sector unions as you know are down to like 7%, if that. Public employee unions are a perfect foil for Republican demagoguery – they’re on the govt payroll – horrors, big govt – and they can be privatized and forced to work for much less money. Plus other than educating our children and providing needed protection and social services what the hell good are they ?
Sadly even non-teabaggers like to trash unions; typical statement something like “unions were good in their day but we don’t need them anymore”, said by people who seem to think people no longer get laid off and are under the assumption that all Americans now have excellent health insurance and pension programs.
Oso, I have never been a union member, so I have no dog in that hunt. But I have only crossed one picket line in my life. DMV workers were on strike and my drivers license expired the next day. It was the fifth time I’d gone to DMV and refused to cross the previous four. When I came out, I joined their picket line.
thumbs up TC!
… and Obama is gleefully participating in this at the federal level.
I would remove gleefully.
I lived in Nassau county when I was a little girl and it hasn’t changed much. Some garages are bigger than my home (3800sq ft) It is the most rish county on Long Island in terms of size. If anyone can afford a tax increase, it’s these people.
Lisa, have you had a gender transformation? You look kike Otis today.
I’ve never lived there, but I wrecked a 10 year old Porsche there as a teen.
