What if the Republicans were to say that, if they don’t get their way, they will attack and destroy the twin towers of the World Trade Center?  We’d think that treat was insane, right?  After all, the twin towers have already been destroyed as a result of Republican incompetence.  They can’t destroy them any more than they already are.  Well, when Mitch McConnell issued his ultimatum that all forty two Republican Senators will filibuster everything unless they get to add $700b billion to the deficit for extra tax cuts for the rich, that threat is no different, because they already filibuster virtually everything before the Senate.

filibuzzardsSenate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell announced this morning that Republicans will block any legislation from coming to the Senate floor until two key economic issues are addressed: funding the government (the “continuing resolution” which must pass to prevent a government shutdown) and the extension of the Bush-era tax cuts.

McConnell said that members of his caucus are united in the pledge to use procedural votes to prevent any other non-economic issues — including the new START treaty, the DREAM Act, or the defense authorization bill that contains a potential repeal of the military’s Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy – from coming to the floor for debate.

"Republicans have pleaded with Democrats to put aside their wish-list – to focus on the things Americans want us to focus on," McConnell said on the Senate floor. "They’ve ignored us. The voters repudiated their agenda at the polls. They’ve ignored them."

In a letter signed by all 42 members of the GOP caucus, Republicans write that, "with little time left in this Congressional session, legislative scheduling should be focused on these critical priorities.”… [emphasis added]

Even though Bought Bitch Mitch is trying to generate fear, Ed Schultz is furious over this, as he discusses with Sen. Tom Harkin and Adam Green of PCCC.

I hope  Obama and the Democrats realize that, even if they cave-in, the Republicans will filibuster everything anyway.

  1. IF as has been reported Obama has called himself a fiscal conservative blue dog democrat *shrug* the republican party will be running the country for the next forty years because he will continue to refuse to fight them or their tactic.

I hope all you people who pray standing up are ready to have christianity become the state religion and you had by god better be kneeling when you address your prayers to a government that has no care for what you want or desire.

  2. Mitch McConnell disgusts me. The American public did not vote to have tax cuts extended to the rich. They just come out and lie about these things. But you’re right – how is this threat to filibuster everything any different from what they’ve been doing all along?

    • Of course we didn’t, Mimi. Republicans won, because Obama and the Democrats caved-in so often that the voting public can’t tell the difference.

  3. I find it ironic that the GOP says the Democrats have not listened to the American people with regards to tax cuts for the wealthy when in fact it is the GOP that is out of touch. If they persist with their blind, arrogant, “my way or the highway” attitude, I predict that the next election will be a blood bath for the GOP when the Great Unwashed realizes there are still no jobs, they are still no better off then than now and the wealthy have only gotten richer.

    • Charles, that’s absolutely right.that Republicans are out of touch. Whether or not your prediction comes true depends on whether or not Republicans can successfully blame Democrats for the damage they caused. It would help if Democrats would fight for a change, especially in the Senate.

  4. I wish Bitch McConnell and Boner would take a long walk off off a short pier. THEY are the ones who are not listening to the American people.
