When the news broke yesterday that Boehner has stated he would not hold Obama’s tax cut for the people hostage to get a huge tax cut for the rich, I correctly opined that his claim was a fraud.  Because Boehner knows that, if passes in that form, Senate Republicans will block it.  Therefore, he and other House Republicans could make the claim that they supported tax cuts for the poor and middle classes.

GOP-no2 Senate Republicans, including Scott Brown of Massachusetts, said yesterday they are opposed to an extension of tax cuts for middle-income families unless cuts also are extended for the wealthiest Americans, setting up a defining showdown with President Obama in the run-up to November’s mid-term elections.

Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell dug in with an all-or-nothing approach and his spokesman said he had enough votes to block anything that falls short of a continuation of cuts for taxpayers in every bracket.

The Senate signaled its determination after the Republican leader in the House, Representative John A. Boehner of Ohio, stunned Washington on Sunday by saying he was ready to compromise as a last resort and back Obama’s plan to extend cuts for middle-income families while letting those for the highest wage earners expire.

Although Democrats continued to accuse the GOP of holding middle-class tax cuts hostage in a bid to benefit the rich, Obama’s position was complicated by the potential defection of some centrist Senate Democrats who also want tax cuts extended for everyone… [emphasis added]

Frankly, it’s best to delay a vote in the House.  Why give Republicans the cover?  Chris Hayes agrees:

This has the potential to be a defining issue in November and could help Democrats minimize the damage.  Keith Olbermann and David Plouffe discuss campaign strategy.

Despite Republican lies to the contrary Democrats have reduced the deficit by a full 8% in Obama’s first year.  During the Bush Regime, Republicans increased it every year.  Now Republicans want to add $700 billion to the deficit to give every millionaire an extra $100,000.  Why?  That’s whose side they are on.  Republicans have only one successful program: No Millionaire Left Behind!  That’s why we must do whatever it takes to leave Republicans behind in November.

  1. Lieberman Favors Extension of Bush-Era Tax Rates for the Wealthy – Senator Joseph I. Lieberman, the Connecticut independent who is aligned with the Democrats, said on Monday that he favored maintaining the lower rates for everyone, including the wealthiest Americans, for at least one more year. “I don’t think it makes sense to raise any federal taxes during the uncertain economy we are struggling through,” Mr. Lieberman said… “The more money we leave in private hands, the quicker our economic recovery will be. And that means I will do everything I can to make sure Congress extends the so-called Bush tax cuts for another year, and takes action to prevent the estate tax from rising back to where it was.” Senate Republicans control enough votes to use the threat of a filibuster to block any legislation on the tax cuts that they do not support. Without the support of all 59 members of the Democratic caucus, it would be all but impossible for Democratic leaders to overcome such a block.

    • As a Connecticut Resident and voter, I apoligize for our Senate Delegation, Dood is retiring (and we’re trying hard not to send Linda WWF MacMahon to DC) but we’re stuck with Lie berman for two more years. To say the he is aligned with the Democrats is not entirely correct. He was defeated in the Primary, he got almost no Democrat votes, received no money from the Party, what he ran on was money from Rove and the RNC. And he’s been voting with the GOP on all the major issues since about 2000.
Again, we apologize for his very existance and we will redouble our efforts to rid Congress of this pig.

      • Welcome CV. 🙂

Knowing your history and views, you have nothing for which to apologze. You did your job when you defeated him in the primary. The Democratic leadership in the Senate is far more culpable, because they allow this Republican to hold a position of power. May you succeed.

    • RJ, I do not expect this legislation to get by the Senate, but pushing votes on it there is a plus, buecuse it forces Republicans to reveal their true nature. On LIEberbush, one of my chief complaints against my party is that they have not thrown that jerk out of trhe caucus and stripped him of his chair.

  2. You can’t trust Agent Orange (Boner); he’d throw his own mother under the bus.

  3. This is the most blatant display yet of Republican megalomania — holding millions of middle and working class Americans hostage. (This is my current post also; great minds and all that…)

I don’t understand how voters can keep falling for Republican scams like this. And yet every poll looks worse and worse for the Democrats and better for Republicans. Just how stupid is our population? (Don’t answer that.)

    • Tom, they keep pushing the ‘trickle down’ myth. I don’t understand why that voters won’t see that nothing ever trickles down. The money gushes up, and the economy gushes down.
