Republicans have surely earned their title as the party of No.  They are against everything Democrats try to pass, even if they were for it only last week.  Their hypocrisy and willingness to throw the American people under the bus is both unprecedented and despicable.

GOBP Senate Democrats announced this afternoon they will go home for a month-long recess without taking action on a scaled-back energy measure that was their best chance for any legislation addressing the issue before the midterm elections. A voted [sic] had been scheduled on the energy bill, which would create jobs and establish new thresholds for BP’s financial responsibility along the Gulf Coast.

With senators citing the hottest July on record, they bashed Republicans for not joining them on a bill they said would hold BP accountable for the oil spill and which would create incentives for green jobs.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid declared, “We are not giving up on energy,” but pointedly said something would be accomplished by the “end of the year,” not before the election. Republicans hopeful they could win back control of Congress this fall are cautioning Democrats against any major legislation during a lame-duck session.

“It’s clear that Republicans remain determined to stand in the way of everything,” Reid told reporters at a press conference. He said the votes are postponed until after senators return from recess Sept. 14.

Sen. John Kerry (D-MA), who worked on a bipartisan bill for months, said Reid does not have the needed votes on this bill or any comprehensive energy measure because “not a single Republican” is on board… [emphasis added]

Of course Republicans wont vote against BP.  They are BP’s lackeys, so they are happy to screw the people for their foreign benefactor.  But the real irony here is that the much stronger bill that this one replaced was built around cap and trade, the same cap and train that McCain and Palin ran on.

  1. My opinion – This is all about making Obama look inept at being able to get anything done, or have his agenda compromised to the point of Democrats being unhappy with him. It seems to be working. What a scum bag strategy, but no surprise. I hope Americans can see through it, and vote for serious leaders.

  2. I’m seeing a 3-card Monte GOP strategy take shape–anchor babies and mama grizzlies and general vindictiveness and Lord knows what else to keep the electorate distracted from the truth that the party has done its best to turn the entire last term into a lame-duck session. I’m with Tom. I hope Americans will have the good sense to recognize what’s happening and not waste their time on these flim-flam artists. But I’m not holding my breath…

  3. Sorry, TomCat, but I have to take strong exception to this statement of yours:

[Republican] hypocrisy and willingness to throw the American people under the bus is both unprecedented and despicable.

It’s my firm belief that there’s a HUGE amount of precedent for Teapublicans’ willingness to throw American citizens under the bus!

That’s why all the Republicans are on the bandwagon of BP did it’s job and there’s nothing more to see here.
These politicians are bought and paid for by BP. Yeah and some Dems too.
