 constitution

We have been covering the US Constitution line by line.  When Republicans wave their paper props and parrot their vile machinations, we will be prepared to expose the lies.  We have finished the main body of the Constitution.  Now we continue with the Amendments.  You can find the last article on the main body of the Constitution here. It has links to all the others.  The text comes from The US Constitution.  Previous articles in the Amendment series:

Article I
Articles II and III
Article IV
Article V
Article VI
Article VII
Article VIII
Articles IX and X
Articles XI and XII
Article XIII
Article XIV
Article XV
Article XVI

[Article XVII]

1:  The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, elected by the people thereof, for six years; and each Senator shall have one vote.  The electors in each State shall have the qualifications requisite for electors of the most numerous branch of the State legislatures.

2:  When vacancies happen in the representation of any State in the Senate, the executive authority of such State shall issue writs of election to fill such vacancies:  Provided, That the legislature of any State may empower the executive thereof to make temporary appointments until the people fill the vacancies by election as the legislature may direct.

3:  This amendment shall not be so construed as to affect the election or term of any Senator chosen before it becomes valid as part of the Constitution.

The Seventeenth Amendment, adopted in 1913, provides for the direct election of Senators by popular vote, when previously, they were chosen by state legislatures.

It is only controversial today, because some Republicans want to repeal it.  I find that quite ironic, because they insist that they are the champion of individual rights.  OOPS!  I suppose we just caught them in another lie.

I shall try to put up a new article in this series almost every day.  It will take some time to cover it all, but when we’re done, we shall be immune to the lies with which Republicans seek to undermine our freedoms.

  1. Ten to one, the people who might benefit the most from this aren’t reading it. Sad.

    • Leslie, you’re right, but what we are accomplishing is clarifying the information to people who do care to help them explain it to those who do care.

  2. Hate to knock a Dem Senator,
but what is John Kerrry doing sailing around New York Harbour in a seven-million- dollar personal yacht.

Says on poop deck, among some usually Kerryseque gobbledegook, “I am a U. S. Senator.”

    Peggy Lee:

    Is that all there is?

    • Ivan, the Democratic party certainly has multiple problems. With Democrats we get some good and some bad. With Republicans, worst is written in stone.

  3. Well it would figure the Republicans want to do away with that too. Anything to help their cause I suppose is how they think.

  4. this is one of those things where you can see how the GOP has been consumed by confederate longing and the desire to weaken the federal government by giving rights to the states, not the people…

I saw a great article a while back where it showed that should the 17th amendment be repealed today, Democrats would benefit by getting way more then 60 senators in office…

The GOP would probably cry that repealing the amendment was just more liberal nonsense that they were tricked into believing…

    • Kevin, from a practical perspevtive, you may be correct, but I prefer direct election. Unlike Republicans, I actually support grass roots activism.
