For the last two days I’ve been wilted, but last night the exhaustion overcame the heat long enough for me to sleep a couple hours, even though this apartment is still 97°  Thursday I kept up with comments and returned visits.  Yesterday I did neither.  Today I hope to at least catch up replying to comments.

Short Takes:

From TPM: There are no shortage of conservatives in Louisiana who’d like to retire David Vitter. But late this afternoon, one prominent Republican decided to make a go of it, entering the race at the last possible moment to take on the scandal-plagued senator in the GOP primary this August.

Maybe Diaper Dave will have to pay for hookers of his own to powder his butt now.

From Common Dreams: Scores of people were arrested in Oakland, California Thursday night in protests over the verdict in the Oscar Grant shooting. Grant was the unarmed 22-year-old African-American man who was shot dead by Johannes Mehserle, a white transit officer, on an Oakland train platform on New Year’s Day, 2009. A jury in Los Angeles convicted Merserle of involuntary manslaughter but he was acquitted on the more serious charges of second-degree murder and voluntary manslaughter.

If Grant had been white, it would have been Murder.  I saw the videos.

  1. I’d like to retire Vitter permanently. Is that too harsh? At least he has a challenger now, but it is LA, so anything could happen. Those poor people down there – hurricanes, oil spills – what’s next locusts and raining frogs?

The Oscar Grant shooting was murder. How do you not distinguish between a 40 cal pistol and a taser (not that either was needed in this case – he was already on the ground and supposedly cuffed). They have to be on different sides of the body so you can’t make that mistake. Supposedly, he was seen kicking the dying Grant after the shooting. Fuck, I’d riot too. They better appeal this case – also, there were no blacks on the jury. How does that happen in liberal CA? This is a complete miscarriage of justice. He should be looking at manslaughter at the very least. He won’t be doing well in prison either.

    • Lisa, they already got ythr frogs. Look at Jindal. 😉

Lisa, I agree, but there is onb appeal. It would be double jeopardy. The only way to move this forward criminally is a federal civil rights case. If he is not given probation, he will be kept in protective custody.

  2. If races were reversed in the situation, Mehserle would have had a much worse lawyer.

Racism: The game the whole country still plays. Quietly.

Oh, and Mehserle will most likely be put in the ‘celebrity wing’ of prison, so he will be just fine in prison. So, there will be absolutely no justice for Grant. Double Jeopardy will disallow an appeal of his conviction by the State. Depending on how long he is in prison, he will probably get popped shortly after his release.

    • True, Otis.

Also, true, except for the GOP, many of whom are quite vocal about it.

And true. I should have read your comment before I replied to Lisa. 🙂
