Yesterday was the last full day of Spring, as Summer begins this morning at 7:28 AM PDT (4:28 EDT).  I stayed up to date on replying to comments and returning visits to bloggers who left comments.  I also visited a bunch of other blogs.   I expect to be able to at least stay up to date today.  My week starts getting busy tomorrow.

Jig Zone Puzzle:

Today it took me 3:17.  To do it, click here.  How did you do?

Short Takes:

From NY Times: The chairman of the House Energy and Environment Subcommittee released an internal BP document on Sunday showing that the company’s own analysis of damage to the well bore resulted in a worst-case estimate of 100,000 barrels of oil leaking into the Gulf of Mexico each day. The chairman, Representative Edward J. Markey of Massachusetts, said the document provided a sharp contrast to BP’s initial claim that the leak was just 1,000 barrels a day. Mr. Markey said that when the document was made available to Congress, BP said that the leak was about 5,000 barrels a day and that the worst case was 60,000 barrels.

Will BP ever tell the truth about anything?

From McClatchy DC: Media consumers want to know why news outlets call the gusher in the Gulf an oil spill.

I started calling it a GOP Gusher on May 24.

From Crooks and Liars:

Once again we see that attempts at bipartisanship with the GOP are futile.

  1. “From McClatchy DC: Media consumers want to know why news outlets call the gusher in the Gulf an oil spill.”

Kind of an abuse of the word “consumer”. Has anyone ever eaten a newspaper? But I digress. I hear the oil spill term in common conversation, not just media.

    • Sure you do, DM. But isn’t common conversation driven, at least to some extent, by the main sources of information?

  2. I started calling it the gusher and I want proper credit. You just put the GOP in front of it. πŸ™‚ And no, BP is not going to ever tell the truth, so you might as well get over it.

What a hilarious vid and so so true!

Anyone planning a vacation to the Gulf states needs their head examined by a professional.

    • Lisa, I was not trying to claim to have coined the term. You were the first person I know to use gusher. However, I do claim Crawford Caligula, GW ChickenHawk, Texas Torquemada, Bad-Tan-Limpy, Mooseolini, Drill Baby Dingbat, McConJob, Teabuggery, and many more.

      Thanks.

  3. I don’t have any words, or terminology, that is ‘mine’, so I have no arguments.

I call the Gulf a mess. Spill is an understatement for the condition, but I would argue that we have tons of oil… mishaps, and ALL of them have been called ‘spills’. So, is it a subversive plot by BP to downplay the situation, or is the media just following precedence? I am not interested in what they are calling what is happening in the Gulf. I am more interested in what they are going to call the Gulf in 5 years. ‘Pleasant’, ‘Touristy’, ‘Fun’, I don’t think are some of the terms that are going to get kicked around.

This may be the event that will 1) Make the deep south Gulf states blue (which wouldn’t surprise me) and 2) May be the catalyst that unleashes the final chain of events culminating on December 21st 2112. I am going to go read Ron Paul’s blog and fold a new tinfoil hat now. (The hat keeps the crazy out.)

    3:08 on the puzzle tonight.

    • Otis, your point is well taken. If I don’t include an occasional bit of humor, albeit gallows humor, I’ll cry… again. My greatest fear is that five years from now, nobody will care how much deep water drilling they do in the Gulf, because they can’t hurt what’s already dead.
