Yesterday I had to run a few errands, but I replied to comments, and then I watched Avatar. It was magnificent. I think I now understand how it must feel to be a member of an indigenous culture destroyed for corporate profit. I recommend it highly, and I didn’t even see the 3-D version.

Short Takes:
From Gizmodo: In response to a flood of Facebook and YouTube videos that depict police abuse, a new trend in law enforcement is gaining popularity. In at least three states, it is now illegal to record any on-duty police officer.
Virtually the only times victims of police abuse see justice is when someone records the video. Such laws will make us a police state.
From SPLC: It appears Congress is on the verge of repealing the controversial “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (DADT) policy for gays in the military. But that, according to the American Family Association’s Bryan Fischer, would be a mistake of epic proportions: It could produce gay, goose-stepping Nazis in America.
Fischer, the religious-right group’s director of issue analysis for government and public policy, claimed last week that Adolf Hitler’s storm troopers were, in fact, a sinister gay fighting force. Only homosexuals were sufficiently vicious to carry out Hitler’s most brutal orders without question, Fischer argues. Heterosexual soldiers just weren’t up to the gruesome task.
Had Jesus shown such hate and intolerance, the GOP/religious-right of his time would have never had him crucified.
From TPM: On a talk show tonight in South Carolina, State Senator Jake Knotts [R] told listeners "we already have one raghead in the White House, we don’t need a raghead in the governor’s mansion." Obama is … well, Obama and "raghead" number two is gubernatorial candidate Nikki Haley, who is the child of Sikh immigrants from the Punjab.
GOP hate and racism is not isolated. It pervades the party, making its destruction imperative.

Sorry, the comment form is closed at this time.
The AFA is nothing but a bunch of crazy, homophobic loons – they are constantly pulling shit out of their asses that makes no sense at all and they have no proof to back it up. People that believe this shit are morons.
Wow, I haven’t heard the term ‘raghead’ since my racist father used it (may he rest in hell). They are eating their own calling a fellow Repub a ‘raghead’. Nice. I am SO glad I do not live in the South – I think I’d be punching people on a daily basis. I’d be in jail ALOT for assault.
The cartoon is dead one.
The cartoon is dead on. Not enough coffee.
Lisa, get convicted here in Oregon. I can help you transition when you get out. 😉
Hilarious cartoon. Unfortunately it’s also true and infuriating.
Thanks Tom. It’s truth, in both literal and figurative terms, blew me away. That’s why I chose it.
Legal prohibition of the recording of public police activity (including brutality) sends a chill down my spine – unless one thinks that a police state is a desirable place to live.
This is particularly so in Illinois which is one of about a dozen states that require all parties to consent before someone can record any conversation. However, the other all-party-consent states also include a provision that details for there to be a violation of the law the non-consenting party must have a reasonable expectation of privacy. On-duty police officers in public spaces would clearly have no such expectation.
While the Illinois eavesdropping law originally included a similar expectation of privacy provision, it was expressly removed in 1994,
Talk about your slippery slopes …
Nameless, I respect most cops, but the bad ones are very bad. A few years back, I called the local station to complain about an officer who turned on his siren and blew through a red light, almost hitting me in the process, just to get to a Dunkin Donuts. That night I received an anonimous phone call that, if I wanted to stay alive, I’d better mind my own business.
Re the AFA: I’m always frustrated that the Left doesn’t apply the same tactics. Round up “experts” and hand them a mic. But then it occurs to me, the Left is not amenable to spreading lunatic-fringe fear and disinformation. Fighting change just isn’t in its DNA.
Re the videotape prohibition. As an Illinois resident, too, I’m disturbed by our law. But I’m also heartened that, in Chicago at least, we all but ignore it. Video of a cop who brutally beat a young woman recently hit the airwaves and they hauled the dog in. Of course, his lawyers will fight the prosecution and it may get thrown out. If that happens, I expect an outcry from these parts that will shake Springfield to the core. I think the law’s days are numbered.
S-F Tim, I agree on both counts. The left has a slight infection that the right seems to lack: integrity. If that case is kicked, I hope you folks go Teabuggered over it… yes… that crazy.
