Everyday Erinyes #94

Experts in autocracies have pointed out that it is, unfortunately, easy to slip into normalizing the tyrant, hence it is important to hang on to outrage.  These incidents which seem to call for the efforts of the Greek Furies (Erinyes) to come and deal with them will, I hope, help with that.  Even though there are many more which I can’t include.  As a reminder, though no one really knows how many there were supposed to be, the three names we have are Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone. These roughly translate as “unceasing,” “grudging,” and “vengeful destruction.”

This story is over a week old, but I am still shaking my head over it, because it is so unprovoked, so off the wall, so out of nowhere.  Well, of course, it isn’t – we know where this kind of behavior comes from – but two years ago, even one year ago, can anyone imagine this happening?

The detais of the incident are so surreal that it may be anybody’s guess what actually happened.  Some details, I suppose, could be getting withheld to protect the integrity of a criminal case, and far be it from me to interfere with that!  But, as best as I can reconstruct looking at multiple sources, here it is –

Emily Bailey was driving near the intersection of Little Road and State Road 54 in Pasco County, Florida.  Another car, driven by Alicia Scarduzio or Kelly Gemberling, was attempting to pass Ms. Bailey’s car (and was being driven aggressively by whichever woman was the driver) when a light turned red, and both vehicles stopped.

Ms. Bailey honked her horn.  She was under stress so it may not even have been intentional.  But, regardless, the two other women “kept screaming at me, telling me they wanted to f****g kill me.  I just wanted the light to change.  I never thought they would get out of their car and run toward me and pull me out of my vehicle.”

But they did.  They dragged her out of her car by the hair.  They beat her.  They banged her head on the ground.  They broke her nose.  They eventually knocked her unconscious.  All the while Scarduzio was yelling “Stop hitting my mom.  Quit hitting my mom.”  (Do I hear echoes of “Stop resisting”?)

A deputy arrived about the same time a man from another car dragged the aggressors off of the victim.  The aggressors claimed they were the victims.  But there is video and there were witnesses.  They have been charged with burglary and aggravated battery.  They were booked into detention the noght of the incident.

Although we know this was not a racist attack (all three women are “white,” and obviously the expression “batshit crazy” must come to everyone’s ind, I still can’t imagine reading this a couple of years ago.  When rage is unleashed, it is unleashed.  It can go anywhere.  Tisiphone, I hope you can follow up on this case and help achieve justice.

In other news – well, I guess it is hardly news that Republicans still do not grasp the concept of “consent,” and Republicans in Louisiana are no exception.  I can’t tell this any better than the Times-Picayune:

A former Tulane University enrollee accused of raping a fellow student on Election Night 2015 received a two-year suspended sentence and was placed on two years’ active probation Monday (Sept. 18) after pleading guilty to two lesser crimes.

Spencer Schneider, 23, had faced up to 25 years in state prison if found guilty as charged of third-degree rape. But under a plea agreement crafted with the help of his high-powered legal team, Schneider resolved the rape case by pleading guilty to a felony count of obscenity and a misdemeanor count of sexual battery.

The obscenity conviction eventually can be expunged from Schneider’s record, but the misdemeanor sexual battery plea cannot. Neither requires Schneider to register as a sex offender.

Criminal District Judge Robin Pittman imposed the sentence after being assured by the state that the accuser in the case had no opposition to the plea agreement, nor to Schneider being placed on probation. The accuser, who later spoke to The Times-Picayune under condition of anonymity, said she accepted the outcome despite some dissatisfaction.

“Although two years’ probation and an obscenity felony is a far cry from what I think would be just, as he deserved to be convicted of rape and registered as a sex offender, I do believe that this was the best that could be done,” the woman said. “In today’s climate, college rapists are rarely even indicted. I am grateful for any sort of conviction.

Just to clarify a little, the obscenity charge is a felony, but can be explunged.  The sexual battery charge, a misdemeanor, cannot.  Two years is damned little, and two years “active probation” is even less, but I would bet a generous sum that it won’t be nearly two years before he is in court trying to get out of it, because he will find it onerous.

Megaera, can’t we start doing better than this?

I’m not trying to pick on the South today, and certainly a state which can produce a Reverend Dr. Barber and a John Pavlovitz is not devoid of real Christians.  However, fake ones are everywhere, including North Carolina.

Word of Faith, a “church” which has about 750 members in rural North Carolina and maybe 2,000 more combined in Brazil, Ghana, Sweden, Scotland, etc., has been under investigation for multiple abuses, such as “exorcism” by means of punching and chioking, luring non-citizens to the U.S, and keeping them in “virtual slavery, and who knows what all (in this case, they definitely are being reticent about the investigation to protect criminal cases, so I won’t press for details) for years.  But the newest allegations to come to light may make even Republicans a little nauseated.

When Randy Fields’ construction company faced potential ruin because of the cratering economy, he pleaded with his pastor at Word of Faith Fellowship church to reduce the amount of money he was required to tithe every week.

To his shock, Fields said church founder Jane Whaley proposed a divine plan that would allow him to continue contributing at least 10 percent of his income to the secretive evangelical church while helping his company survive: He would file fraudulent unemployment claims on behalf of his employees. She called it, he said, “God’s plan.”

The word “venal” somehow springs to mind.  This, ladies and gentlemen, is how the Dominionists would govern – by theft.  Alecto, theocracy is very old, but it has always been horrible.  Even though the people who need to be convinced probably will not be, since they are accustomed to a level of cognitive dissonance way beyond what we can tolerate, it is still important to prove – again – that crime like this does not pay.

The Furies and I will be back.

It’s that time of week again, and I’m happy to share four excellent video clips from Bill’s show last night.  Enjoy!!

Monologue: Take a Knee

I seriously doubt that Chinese people spit in the laundry, and from what I’ve seen, dawgs are bisexual. Yes Bill, speaking of Trumps tax plan is thinking of getting fucked up the ass.

Paul Hawken: Project Drawdown

Bill: "Nothing good is going to happen on this issue or on any other issue, until Democrats take over Congress." Amen!! Check Hawken out!

Punching Nazis

I fully agree. If we act like Republicans, how can others tell the difference between us and them? Call them out and shame them. Then, if they punch you, clobbering Republican Nazis is self-defense is permissible.

New Rule: The Kremlin Konnection

Dang! Those nicknames are as good as the ones I make up. Pence’s was the most evil nickname.  What could be more insulting than ‘Mike Pence’? Otherwise, amen and amen again!

I hope you got some comic relief.

I got to bed late again last night.  As I plugged my iPhone in to recharge, it notified me that it needed to update to sync.  I learned long ago that, if I don’t babysit it to input pins and password on prompt, it tends to upfuckticate instead of update.  It took an hour.  I overslept this morning, so I’m skipping my nap and will probably publish a little early.  My Quicken substitute, CountAbout, is starting to come together, although the documentation is poor and the learning curve is steep.  However, their tech support, unlike Quicken, is quick and efficient, and after my free trial expires, it will cost only $40 a year.  Tomorrow is a holy day in the Church of the Ellipsoid Orb.  My Broncos will be hosting the Raiders, and it may be televised here.  Teams are still TBA.  It is also a Wendy day.  Fantasy Players, make changes in your lineup before 6:30 AM Pacific, as there is another London game.  Monday is my four week cataract follow up, so the Monthly Report for September will be several days late.  In international terms, I’m putting 2 kilos of kitty shit in a one kilo bag.

Short Takes:

From CNN: President Donald Trump launched an attack on San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz on Saturday for criticizing the White House’s hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico, accusing her of “poor leadership” and suggesting that the island’s residents are not doing enough to help themselves.

“The Mayor of San Juan, who was very complimentary only a few days ago, has now been told by the Democrats that you must be nasty to Trump,” the President tweeted from his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, where he is spending the weekend. “… Such poor leadership ability by the Mayor of San Juan, and others in Puerto Rico, who are not able to get their workers to help. They want everything to be done for them when it should be a community effort.” [emphasis added]

Here is what Mayor Cruz had said and why.

You’re doing a heck of a job, Trumpie! NOT!! RESIST!!

From The New Yorker: In an experience that he called “traumatic” and “horrifying,” the departing Health and Human Services Secretary, Tom Price, was seated between two screaming babies Friday night on his first-ever commercial flight.

Price, who was flying from Washington, D.C., to his home in Georgia just hours after resigning from his Cabinet position, reacted with alarm after discovering that the airline had assigned him a middle seat between two passengers holding inconsolably shrieking babies on their laps.

Moments after making his terrible discovery, Price urgently called for a flight attendant and reportedly told her, “There are babies on this aircraft. That can’t possibly be allowed.”

After informing Price that babies were, in fact, permitted on commercial flights, the attendant instructed the former Cabinet secretary to fasten his seatbelt and ignored his request to be served a free glass of Dom Perignon champagne and beluga caviar with toast points.

Dang Andy! I actually have to agree that seating Price between two screaming babies was “traumatic” and “horrifying”. Those poor babies will need psychotherapy to get over being seated next to Price! RESIST!!

From Robert Reich: Trump and Republicans are trying to sell you the idea that American corporations need a tax cut in order to be competitive. That’s rubbish. Here are 6 reasons why:

The Reich on the left is right! As I have long said, Republican supply-side lies are not the solution to the demand-side problems Republicans have created. RESIST!!

Trump just this week announced his Tax Plan with its “giant, beautiful, massive tax cut”.  So, no doubt you were excited when Trump’s Chief Economic Advisor, Gary Cohn, told us that:

“…a typical family earning $100,000 with two children that has been a standard deductor … can expect a tax cut of about $1,000.”

https://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2017/09/28/press-briefing-press-secretary-sarah-sanders

Well, a couple of things I’d like to point out to you, Gary (can I call you Gary?  I like to call all my employees by their first name).  According to the latest Census Bureau’s figures, the median income in America is about $59,000.  That’s a pretty far cry from your “typical” six-figure income!

https://www.census.gov/newsroom/press-releases/2017/income-povery.html

And Gary, this just shows how out of touch (or tone-deaf) with the average American family you are.  But that’s pretty de rigueur with the Trump administration, chockablock full with its millionaires and billionaires.

Oh, WRT Mr. Cohn, the former CEO of Goldman Sachs?

Gary Cohn, the former Goldman CEO and long-time banker is worth somewhere from $252 million to $611 million, according to a financial disclosure form released by the White House

https://www.thestreet.com/story/14069148/1/gary-cohn-worth-as-much-as-600-million-white-house-report-shows.html

But that didn’t stop Mr. Cohn from telling us how absolutely wonderful this supposed $1,000 tax saving is going to be:

If we allow a family to keep another $1,000 of their income, what does that mean? They can renovate their kitchen, they can buy a new car, they can take a family vacation, they can increase their lifestyle.

https://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2017/09/28/press-briefing-press-secretary-sarah-sanders

Well, of course Twitter had a field day with Gary “I’m-In-Touch-With-America” Cohn’s claim that we can remodel our kitchens or buy our families a new car or take them on a wonderful vacation with that $1,000 tax savings.  And I’m sure you all have seen or can imagine some of the examples – like a shot of the “typical” American family’s new car:

But we’re now in the ninth month of the flailing and failing Trump administration with no sign that they’re going to get their act together anytime soon ever.  And sadder still is there is no sign they even want to!

But since this post is supposed to be the dedicated “FUN” one for PoliticsPlus, I decided I’d take their challenge and see what I could do with $1,000 to remodel my kitchen.

You’ll be glad to learn that with just a “wee bit” of downsizing I had great success!  But as the old adage goes, “The proof of the pudding is in the eating” – so let’s chow down!

First of all, to be successful with my $1,000 kitchen remodeling, courtesy of Trump’s “Tax Cut”, I had to scale back my expectations:

Fortunately I was able to actually afford the double-burner stove!

As far as the tasting proof goes, since it’s breakfast time when I’m posting this, how about some pancakes?

What about a hamburger for lunch?

And for supper?  Let’s have some fried shrimp and sautéed vegetables …

Or maybe some sushi …

Let’s finish off our dinner with a delicious strawberry shortcake!

And all of this was accomplished for UNDER $1,000!

See … Cohn was right!  Of course you’ll starve to death with the Trump Tax Cut Savings kitchen remodel job – but since their hopes of killing off Americans with Trumpcare fell through, I guess this is their fallback plan.

Bon Appétit!

I imagine I must have you scratching your heads wondering how the Republican Reich could possibly support the National Popular Vote, since they depend on the Electoral College to circumvent the will of the people.  I wasn’t referring to Republican Reich, the Reich on the right that is always wrong.  I was referring to the Reich on the left that is always right, Robert Reich.

0929dt_web

We must make sure our democracy doesn’t ever again elect a candidate who loses the popular vote. That means making the Electoral College irrelevant.

Here’s how: As you probably know, the Constitution assigns each state a number of electors based on the state’s population. The total number of electors is 538, so any candidate who gets 270 of those Electoral College votes becomes president.

Article II of the Constitution says states can award their electors any way they want. So all that’s needed in order to make the Electoral College irrelevant is for states with a total of at least 270 electors to agree to award all their electoral votes to the presidential candidate who wins the popular vote.

If they do that, then automatically the winner of the popular vote gets the 270 electoral college votes he or she needs to become president…

Robert didn’t convince me.  Click here and here for two earlier examples of my NPV support.

Unfortunately, the NPV is in trouble here in Oregon, because one Democratic Senator has joined the Republicans to hold it up.

I just called his office in Salem.

From The New Yorker: In a ringing endorsement from the Secretary of Education, Betsy DeVos said on Thursday that she did the math on Donald Trump’s tax plan and that she estimates it will save the United States roughly eleventy krillion dollars.

“I took out a pencil and paper and figured it out the old-fashioned way,” DeVos told reporters. “I wound up going through a lot of paper, because eleventy krillion has ten hundredteen zeroes.”

DeVos stressed that the eleventy-krillion figure was actually a conservative estimate. “The exact number was between eleventy and ninety-quelve, but I rounded down to eleventy,” she said.

I suppose I could tell you my allergies have been acting up …

But I don’t have allergies.

Or maybe I’ve been having some GI problems …

But that wouldn’t be accurate.

The truth is I’ve been trying to come up with a topic – but had Bupkis

Until last night when one of Trump’s advisors stepped up and provided me with my topic!

But it’s evolved over time, and I want to get it right.  Plus I HAVE to core aerate the lawn today.  And if any of you have ever rented a core aerator … well, my condolences!

It’s my least favorite yard chore – and it’s a helluva a lot of work … especially turning the damn monster around.  I’ll be sore for a couple of days.

The Republican Tax Plan

An outline of the Republican Tax Plan is out, and Republican’s claim that it’s a middle class tax cut that will pay for itself and does virtually nothing to help the rich.  Of course, like Republican claims about the RepubliCare fiasco, the truth and Republican claims about it could not be further apart.

0928rumpGreed

The tax plan that the Trump administration outlined on Wednesday is a potentially huge windfall for the wealthiest Americans. It would not directly benefit the bottom third of the population. As for the middle class, the benefits appear to be modest.

The administration and its congressional allies are proposing to sharply reduce taxation of business income, primarily benefiting the small share of the population that owns the vast majority of corporate equity. President Trump said on Wednesday that the cuts would increase investment and spur growth, creating broader prosperity. But experts say the upside is limited, not least because the economy is already expanding.

The plan would also benefit Mr. Trump and other affluent Americans by eliminating the estate tax, which affects just a few thousand uber-wealthy families each year, and the alternative minimum tax, a safety net designed to prevent tax avoidance… [emphasis added]

Inserted from <NY Times>

The Gray Lady is being far too generous when they speak of modest gains for the middle class.  In fact a couple with two kids earning $79,000 a year would pay MORE under this Republican welfare for billionaires package.

Lawrence O’Donnell discussed the plan with Bruce Bartlett and David Cay Johnston.

Here’s the bottom line.  Republicans plan to take YOUR money and give it to billionaires.  It must not pass!
